주일설교(Sunday Sermon) 행(Acts) 9:31
June 5 2022
“Lord, grant us a revival”
Everyone wants to prosper and develop for themselves, their families, their communities, and their country.
This is human's natural instinct. This kind of progress and development is called revival in biblical terms.
Therefore, no matter what church or church member you are in, you want to revive yourself or the church you belong to.
Do you want to revive yourself, your family, and the church you serve? It is normal for these wishes to be among us.
If not, you may not have met Jesus personally yet.
If we were saved by the grace of Jesus on the cross, we cannot help but be grateful to those who have truly realized that great love.
So, personally, we want to grow more and more in our faith and spiritually revive ourselves so that we can become more pleasing to the Lord. Also, our family is becoming a family that serves the Lord well, and our church is also a gracious and Holy Spirit-filled church.
It is a normal Christian heart to want to become a church that leads more and more souls to the Lord by becoming a church that glorifies God.
If so, what is the principle of revival and the secret of revival?
Today's text is one of the words of the Bible that tells the principle and secret of revival. Let's read today's text again.
“So the church throughout all Judea and Galilee and Samaria enjoyed peace, being built up; and going on in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit, it continued to increase.” (Acts 9:31).
First, if we look at today's words, we can see the meaning of revival.
A revival can be defined as 'because of God's grace, in peace, standing strong, and growing in number'.
First you need to be at peace
There must be peace with God and there must be peace among men
First, in order to make peace with God, you must admit that you are a sinner before God and repent. And we must believe in Jesus, whom God sent to save this world, then we become children of God and possess the true peace that the Lord gives us.
That's why the Lord said, "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid." (John 14:27).
And whether at home or in the church, we who became children of God because of Jesus are all God's family, so we must love each other as the Lord says
Even if we make mistakes, we must learn to forgive and bless each other. Then there is peace
And revival must also grow numerically.
If I truly meet Jesus and have the thrill of salvation, I will have no choice but to preach Jesus.
If you do that, the number of people around you who believe in Jesus and are saved will increase.
Also, just as the Bible said, "Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved--you and your household." (Acts 16:31), if a person in his family first believes in Jesus and is saved, he will pray and evangelize for his family. Then, the rest of the family will believe in Jesus and be saved one by one.
And if the church is thankful for the grace the members have received and preaches Jesus, the number of church members naturally increases.
In this way, inwardly, that one person is saved, and in his heart is the peace of heaven from the Lord and there is peace in the community. Outwardly, preaching Jesus and increasing the number of believers is called revival.
Then, the secret of that revival, what is the method, there are two
The first is “the fear of the Lord” and the second is “the comfort of the Holy Spirit”
First, there must be ‘fear of the Lord’ for revival to occur.
When you say “the fear of the Lord”, fear is the first thing you awe and revere. Man must learn to fear God
Before we believed in Jesus, we were afraid of even the devil, who is just a minor of Satan. But we are no longer afraid of that
Rather, after we believe in Jesus, we come to know that there is someone we are really afraid of. He is God.
Jesus also said
“I tell you, my friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body and after that can do no more.
But I will show you whom you should fear: Fear him who, after the killing of the body, has power to throw you into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him.” (Luke 12:4-5).
Jesus repeatedly emphasizes the fear of God twice.
We must fear God.
And the Lord also told us to love God
“Jesus replied: " 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.'
This is the first and greatest commandment.” (Matthew 22:37-38).
So, collectively, reverence means to fear God while loving God with all your heart, soul, and mind.
So it is obedience to the will and word of God.
When King Saul feared and loved God and humbly obeyed His Word, he experienced a revival.
But when he became proud and disregarded God, suffering and failure came into his life.
This was a principle that applied equally to all the kings of Israel.
So, the prophet Jeremiah at the end of the southern kingdom of Judah records the situation of the fallen people of Judah at that time.
“To whom can I speak and give warning? Who will listen to me? Their ears are closed so they cannot hear. The word of the LORD is offensive to them; they find no pleasure in it.” (Jeremiah 6:10).
Since God's word, which saves our souls and leads to life and blessings, was regarded as an insult, what were their results?
Wasn't it the humiliation of being invaded by Babylon and suffered a disastrous destruction, and the Temple of Jerusalem destroyed and taken into captivity?
But when good kings who feared God obeyed God's Word, they could experience peace and revival.
You will see that behind all the works of revival in the Bible, there was a heart and attitude to fear God, that is, to love and obey God while fearing God.
That is why the Bible says, “Blessed are all who fear the LORD, who walk in his ways.” (Psalm 128:1).
Second, the secret of revival is “the comfort of the Holy Spirit”
However, if you look up at today's text, you can see that 1) is marked with a footnote, and if you look at the bottom left of the Bible, you can see that it says 1) or by support.
That is, it can be interpreted as the support of the Holy Spirit along with the comfort of the Holy Spirit.
And if you look at some English Bibles, you can see the translation with the encouragement of the Holy Spirit.
Then, one thing we can know here is that the Holy Spirit is the one who comforts, encourages, and supports us.
In John 16, Jesus said to His disciples before He was crucified, "It is to your advantage that I go away, for if I go away I will send you the Counselor the Holy Spirit, but unless I go away, the Counselor will not come."
The word 'Comforter' that Jesus used to refer to the Holy Spirit here is parakletos in Greek, meaning 'one sent by God to help.'
We see translations in English as comforter, counselor, helper, etc.
And in John 14:16, the Lord said, “"I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever;” (John 14:6).
If you look here, the expression 'another Comforter' appears. Here, there are two Greek words for the word ‘another' means 'different'. One is heteros, which is used to refer to things that are qualitatively different. The other is the word allos, which is qualitatively the same but different It is a word used when speaking
By the way, allos is used here
This means that instead of the Counselor Jesus, the same but another Counselor, the Holy Spirit, will now come instead of Jesus and will continue the work that Jesus did.
This means that the Holy Spirit is equal to Jesus.
Therefore, since Jesus said, “I and the Father are one” (John 10:30), we must see Jesus as equal to God and fear Him as God.
And now that Jesus speaks of the Holy Spirit as equals, we must see and fear the Holy Spirit as God equal with Jesus.
In this way, the Holy Spirit is the one who guides, helps, and comforts us who believe in Jesus but are still lacking and weak.
So, in John 20, after Jesus was resurrected, Jesus appeared to the disciples and first proclaimed 'Peace be with you' twice, and then said, 'As the Father has sent me, I am sending you into the world.' He told them before that, 'You receive the Holy Spirit.'
Even though we believe in Jesus, the Lord knows very well that we are the weak and insufficient disciples, so He knew that only when we receive the Holy Spirit and receive the help, comfort and support of the Holy Spirit can we go out into the world and preach the gospel with power.
And in Acts 1, Jesus was on this earth for 40 days after his resurrection, and telling his disciples about the kingdom of God, he said, 'Do not leave Jerusalem, wait for the promise of the Father. John baptized with water. In a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.”
He also said, 'You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth'.
When we look at these words as a whole, we can see how much Jesus loved his disciples and how earnestly he wanted them to receive the Holy Spirit and accomplish them with the help and support of the Holy Spirit when they went out to the world to preach the gospel.
Beloved, today is Pentecost.
It is the day the Holy Spirit promised to the disciples and saints of the Lord who were gathered in Mark's upper room in Jerusalem 2,000 years ago. As they experienced the cross and resurrection of the Lord and the ascension of the Lord, they truly believed and feared Jesus as God.
And with complete reverence and humility, as the Lord had said before His ascension, we did not leave Jerusalem, but gathered in Mark's upper room to pray and waited for the Father's promised Holy Spirit. And they finally received the Holy Spirit after 10 days have been fully received
And they feared God more and more and served the Lord out of reverence.
They received the teachings of the Word in the fear of the Lord every day, prayed, and lived a life of sharing and serving each other.
Then the comfort of the Holy Spirit abounded, and as the support and help of the Holy Spirit abounded, amazing works of healing and salvation and revivals took place.
And such revival spread like fire to not only Jerusalem, but also to all Judea, Galilee, and Samaria, as described in today's text.
Churches were established in each region and the number of believers increased
This revival went around the world and finally came to our country, and the Korean church experienced such an amazing revival that is unprecedented in the history of the world church by the grace of God.
But today, I hear sad stories that the Korean church has stopped revival and is rather regressing, saying that evangelism is too difficult, and that many churches have closed their Sunday schools.
In particular, they say that new churches and small churches have become more and more difficult in the Corona era.
But I believe. If we believe in the Holy Trinity, who is the same yesterday, today, and forever, the principle of the Word given today is always the same.
Of course, we can never achieve revival in our own strength and ability.
But do we truly fear the Holy Trinity? Let's take a look at our inner motives. And do you believe and depend on the Holy Spirit, long for His help and support, obey God's will only, and pray for God's glory?
Then we believe that no matter the circumstances, we will experience revival.
In fact, the revival of the early church in the book of Acts was never due to the good or peaceful external environment.
There was also great tribulation and persecution.
But in the midst of this, they truly feared the Lord and experienced the Lord who rose and ascended into heaven, so they were bold enough not to fear death, and experienced revival with the comfort and support of the Holy Spirit.
Everyone, on this Sunday of Pentecost, the disciples of the Lord of the early church gathered in Mark's upper room and prayed as they prayed earnestly while waiting for the Father's promised Holy Spirit
Just as the prophet Habakkuk prayed for revival, saying, “LORD, I have heard the report about You and I fear O LORD, revive Your work in the midst of the years” (Habakkuk 3:2), let us also pray for each other’s personal spiritual revival among the saints.
And pray for the revival of each family and the revival of our church and all churches.
Pray also for the revival of all missionaries and their churches.
Pray for the true reverence of the Lord and the comfort and support of the Holy Spirit in all of our individuals, families, churches and communities. Pray earnestly
As we meditate on the Word, financial support and intercessory support are necessary and important, especially when we support missionaries, new churches, or small churches.
But I came to think that the really important thing is the support of the Holy Spirit.
No matter how hard we try humanly, if the Holy Spirit does not work, peoples will not change and they will still have a hardened heart.
However, I believe that when the Holy Spirit works, amazing works of repentance, regeneration, and change will occur just as Saul changed and became Paul.
It is said that a man named Billy Bray was a drunkard and a prodigal British miner. But when he was 29 years old, he heard the gospel and accepted Jesus as his savior.
And he always feared the Lord and relied on the Holy Spirit while reading the Word, meditating and praying, and after that he changed.
He always praised God, evangelized, and preached. At that time, the Holy Spirit worked together and many people were saved and the work of healing took place.
Pastor Ik-doo Kim, a famous revivalist in the early church in Korea, is the same.
He was once a bad person that the community knew about, but after believing in Jesus and repenting, he became a person who only feared the Lord and depended on the Holy Spirit, a person of the Word and prayer.
And as a pastor, he became a revivalist who led many souls to the Lord, healed many sick people, and glorified God.
Everyone, here is the way to revival. It is to truly fear the Lord, and to truly depend on the Holy Spirit to receive the comfort and support of the Holy Spirit. We should try to read the Word, pray, and evangelize, but our efforts alone are not enough.
The work and support of the Holy Spirit must be together
I pray in the name of the Lord that when we all humbly live according to the principles of this Word, we will all experience God's revival and live.
