(Deuteronomy) 34:9
June 12 2022
“Because Moses laid his hands on Joshua”
A young man named Saul, who was persecuting the church, was on his way to Damascus to persecute those who believed in Jesus.
But on the way to Damascus, Saul met a strong light and fell to the ground.
and he heard a voice
“Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?” (Acts 9:4)
Then Saul asks “Who are you?” He said, “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting” (Acts 9:5).
Saul, who met the Lord, became blind. He went to Damascus with the guidance of the people. There, he met a faithful disciple of the Lord named Ananias, and was placed on his hands. He was filled with the Holy Spirit, and he was able to see again.
And he devoted the rest of his life to preaching the gospel of the Lord and establishing the church, becoming the second most important person in the New Testament after Jesus.
In this way, he became Paul, the beloved disciple and servant of the Lord, from Saul, who was the enemy of the Lord.
Such a Paul probably could not forget the road to Damascus where he met him all his life.
And he must have never forgotten the place where Ananias laid his hands on him, the Holy Spirit came upon him, and his eyes were opened in any house on the street called Damascus.
He must have always shed tears of gratitude and emotion when he thought of that time.
It cannot be compared with the Apostle Paul, but I also have memories of meeting the Lord and a place of thanks.
That was the White Stone Church in Seoul that I attended at the time in 1988.
At that time, the church that was rented on the second floor of a shabby building was run by a pastor who was a senior in my hometown and distant relative at the time, and my brother and sisters were attending the church together.
The church did not have chairs at the time. The floor of the church was vinyl flooring, and all members of the church sat on cushions to worship. So whenever I prayed, I remember that I always got down on my knees and prayed.
Then, one day in April 1988, there was a spring revival meeting in our church, and on the last day of that revival meeting, I knelt down and prayed to God as the revival lecturer and pastor recommended.
“I think I am a sinner. If there is God, please see me. Forgive me for my sins.” I prayed like a real true prayer for the first time
Then, after a while, I realized how much a sinner I am in front of the cross of the Lord in the fervent work of the Holy Spirit, and I enjoy deep repentance and the joy and thrill of atonement.
And as I prayed in tongues, which I never expected, my prayer life and faith life changed completely.
Until then, I had been attending church for about two years through the evangelism of my sisters, but I had little faith, and I hardly ever prayed like a prayer.
But that night, I had the assurance of salvation, became a new person, and on that day my life completely changed.
That is why I never forget the grace of God that was at the church that day and I am always thankful.
At that time, the pastor of our church was originally from a sergeant in the Military Police, but he was not feeling well either because of an accident or from an illness.
At the crossroads of life and death, while praying at a prayer center, he received the fire of the Holy Spirit, was healed, and devoted himself to the Lord and became a pastor later.
So, I remember that the pastor always emphasized prayer and the Word, the filling of the Holy Spirit and faith, and a life separated from the world.
And what that pastor did a lot was the prayer on the laying on of hands. I remember praying for the laying on of hands to the saints from time to time during the Sunday worship service or the all-night prayer meeting. At that time, I was young and did not know it well, but now that I think about it, I think that it is a very beautiful and precious memory.
In today's text, we see the scene where Moses laid his hands on Joshua.
“Now Joshua son of Nun was filled with the spirit of wisdom because Moses had laid his hands on him. So the Israelites listened to him and did what the LORD had commanded Moses.” (Deuteronomy 34:9).
Moses placed his hands on his hands and prayed and blessed Joshua, his spiritual successor and successor to lead the people of Israel.
Then it tells Joshua that he was filled with the Spirit of Wisdom, the Holy Spirit. Isn't that a beautiful scene?
However, the word laid on his hands here means 'put his hands on ~'. In Genesis 48, we see a scene where Jacob laid his hands on the heads of his son Joseph's two sons, Manasseh and Ephraim, and blessed them.
In today's text, it is not specifically stated where Moses laid his hands on Joshua, but there is a tendency to think of Jacob's blessing as putting his hands on his head.
That is why even today, when we ordained pastors or church officers, we usually put our hands on their heads and pray.
And another important thing is that it was not Moses' own idea that Moses prayed for Joshua to lay his hands on Joshua. It was God's instruction.
Let's see the Numbers 27:18.
“So the LORD said to Moses, "Take Joshua son of Nun, a man in whom is the spirit, and lay your hand on him."” (Numbers 27:18).
God directly told Moses to take Joshua and lay his hands on him, so Moses obeyed today's text in Deuteronomy 34 and laid his hands on him. And as a result, it is said that Joshua was filled with the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of Wisdom.
The laying on of hands is a prayer that God Himself has commanded.
And when it comes to the New Testament, it is Jesus who prayed the laying on of hands a lot.
A typical example is Matthew 19 where Jesus laid his hands on his hands. Let's read Matthew 19:13-15 together.
“Then little children were brought to Jesus for him to place his hands on them and pray for them. But the disciples rebuked those who brought them.
Jesus said, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these."
When he had placed his hands on them, he went on from there.” (Matthew 19:13-15)
People brought little children to the Lord in the hope that the Lord would put His hands on them, bless them, and pray.
However, the disciples refused to interfere with Jesus as he was busy, but the Lord placed his hands on the little children and blessed them.
Also, Jesus healed many sick people in various ways, sometimes by laying his hands on them.
A typical example is found in Luke 13.
When Jesus went into a synagogue on the Sabbath and taught, there was a woman who had been possessed by a demon for 18 years and her back was bent and she couldn't straighten it at all.
Then the Lord said, “Woman, you are set free from your infirmity.” and in verse 13, "Then he put his hands on her, and immediately she straightened up and praised God." (Luke 13:13).
This is how Jesus prayed on his hands when he blessed and when he was healing
And if you look at the early church in the book of Acts, you can see that the prayer of laying on hands was often performed.
First, in Acts 6, we see that the apostles ordained the church when they first established the church officers.
“This proposal pleased the whole group. They chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit; also Philip, Procorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas from Antioch, a convert to Judaism. They presented these men to the apostles, who prayed and laid their hands on them.” (Acts 6:5-6).
And in Acts 8, among those who were scattered to all directions due to the persecution of the church in Jerusalem, deacon Philip went to Samaria and preached the gospel.
At that time, the demons departed, and a miracle appeared of healing for the sick, and many believed and were baptized.
At this time, the Jerusalem church heard that Samaria had also heard the gospel and sent Peter and John to Samaria.
Then they went and prayed for the Samaritans to receive the Holy Spirit.
And verse 17 says, “Then Peter and John placed their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.” (Acts 8:17).
Also, as I said at the beginning, in Acts 9, we see that Paul also received Ananias's laying on of hands, his eyes were opened and he was filled with the Holy Spirit.
And not only that, in Acts 19, the apostle Paul went to Ephesus and met some disciples.
However, Paul saw that their faith was a bit strange, so he asked a question. "Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?" They answered, "No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit."
So Paul knew that their baptism was that of John the Baptist, so he preached the gospel to them and got them baptized in the name of Jesus. And in verse 6
“When Paul placed his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied.” (Acts 19:6).
As in Samaria in Acts 8, the Holy Spirit came upon the people when paul laid his hands on them.
Also, in Acts 28, the Apostle Paul laid his hands on his hands and healed him. Verse 8, “His father was sick in bed, suffering from fever and dysentery. Paul went in to see him and, after prayer, placed his hands on him and healed him.” (Acts 28:9).
Everyone, in the book of Acts, you see that when the church officers were appointed, they were laid on their hands, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and the sick were healed when they laid their hands on them.
Therefore, when all these words are put together, the laying on of hands or prayer on the laying on of hands is a precious prayer used as a tool to receive God's grace and blessings, to receive healing from diseases, and to experience the presence of the Holy Spirit.
So we can see that it is a prayer that our Lord and His disciples used a lot.
When I pray for the laying on of hands, I remember the words of Pastor Jong-Soon Park, the elder pastor of the Chungshin Church in Seoul.
Pastor Jong-soon Park said that during all-night prayer or when he went to a prayer center and offered a mountain prayer, Pastor Park laid his hands on over 1,000 members and prayed for them.
It is said that some of the members of the church were healed of diseases, or the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke in tongues and experienced gifts.
It is very tiring to ordain more than a thousand members, but he ordained them all out of love.
And Pastor Park said that after the meeting and prayer meeting, he advised that we should come back to reason from emotional excitement and live by holding on to the Word.
And I remember that in our church, when we had revival meetings in the past, those who wanted to receive the prayer for the laying on of hands after each meeting were allowed to pray.
Also, at Kosta meetings, mainly for those who decide to dedicate themselves to God after the night meeting.
I remember mainly the pastors giving blessings by laying their hands on their hands.
Let me ask you one last question.
Have you ever received the prayer of laying on hands?
When was the last time you received it?
I know that there are people who have not received the prayer of laying on hands or have received it a long time ago.
And do you have any negative thoughts about the laying on of hands?
If there are such people, I bless them that such negative thoughts will disappear through today's message.
Everyone, again, please do not forget that the laying on of hands is used as a valuable tool to receive God's grace and blessings, to receive healing from diseases, and to experience the presence of the Holy Spirit.
So, before the last ascension in Mark 16, the Lord told his disciples to preach the gospel to all nations.
“And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues;
they will pick up snakes with their hands; and when they drink deadly poison, it will not hurt them at all; they will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well.” (Mark 16:17-18)
Finally, he said, “they will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well."”
This is a message to those who believe in the Lord to lay their hands on the sick
Everyone, looking at the various words of the Bible about laying on hands today, I think we have understood to some extent what the prayer for laying hands is like.
As I prepared the Word and prayed this time, I thought that I, myself, had to receive the prayer for the laying on of hands from faithful people during my pastoral ministry, and that I, as a pastor, would have to work harder on the prayer for the laying on of hands.
The Apostle Paul says in Ephesians 6:18, “And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests.”
There are many types of prayer, and Paul says that we should pray all kinds of prayers, and when we pray, we should always pray in the Spirit, that is, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
Everyone, therefore, out of the various types of prayer, I think that the laying on of hands is a very precious prayer and a powerful prayer.
In the future, through the biblical laying on of hands prayers, the prayers on the hands of faith, and the prayers on the hands with the anointing of the Holy Spirit that we shared with you today, I hope that you and I will all experience God's abundant grace and grow more spiritually to please God. I bless you all in the name of our Lord Jesus
