주일설교(Sunday Sermon) 눅(Luke) 24:50-53
May 29, 2022
“Jesus Is Taken Up to Heaven”
People admired flying birds and longed for them to fly. And they dreamed of flying
And finally, in 1903, American brothers Wilbur and Orville Wright built the world's first powered airplane. That's how people got to fly
And people kept wanting to fly that high in space, so they finally built a spaceship and flew it to the moon. And they want to go further and higher, so they keep developing better spaceships.
People also saw the high mountains of the land and wanted to climb to the top of them. And one or two people started to challenge
So, finally, in 1953, New Zealand mountaineer Edmund Hillary became the first to climb Mount Everest in Himalaya, the highest in the world, and many others have since climbed it.
In this way, people have a desire to go to a high place, a desire to climb a high place.
In a way, I wonder if this is how our longing for heaven, the hometown of our souls, is expressed in that way.
It is said that about 5,000 people appear in the Bible. Among them, there are three people who are recorded as ascending to heaven in that body.
First, the prophets Enoch and Elijah in the Old Testament.
They did not suffer the death that everyone suffers, but went to heaven by God's special grace. All humans go through the painful process of death, but these two people skipped that process.
In a way, they are really enviable people, and they are people who have really received special benefits.
And Jesus ascended to heaven, but Jesus is different. Enoch and Elijah went to heaven without suffering death, but Jesus died on the cross to atone for the sins of mankind and rose from the dead on the third day, and then ascended to heaven.
The Lord has restored the original glory of God the Son, so He is our eternal Savior.
Thankfully, if we, sinners, believe in this Jesus, our sins will be forgiven, we will become children of God, and we will receive the resurrection of life.
And we will be ascended into heaven when Jesus comes again in our resurrected body.
And all the saints who have already died, although their bodies have returned to dust, will ascend to heaven in resurrected bodies when the trumpet is sounded on the day of the Lord's return. About this, 1 Thessalonians chapter 4 tells us
“For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first.
After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever.” (1 Thessalonians 4:16-17).
I don't know how grateful and moved I am every time I read these words. Most people who do not know the Lord think that it is end when people die and return to the dust. But the Bible doesn't say that. After death, there is resurrection. As the Lord said, those who did not know the Lord and did not believe in Him will experience the resurrection of judgment to receive eternal punishment.
That is why the Lord Himself said, “and come out--those who have done good will rise to live, and those who have done evil will rise to be condemned.” (John 5:29).
“Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.” (Matthew 25:46).
And also to think about, there will be people who believe in and serve Jesus at that time when the Lord comes back to this earth. Then what will happen to them? They will all ascend to heaven just like Enoch and Elijah.
1 Thessalonians 4:17 says, “After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air”
They do not suffer death and are taken up alive into heaven, although of course they will be transformed into a body like the body of the Lord's resurrection.
So the Lord said earlier in John 11:25-26:
“Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?” (John 11:25-26)
Those who died believing in Jesus, who is the resurrection and the life, said, “He who believes in me, even if he dies, will live.” All of them will rise again. In other words, there will be a resurrection of life
And it is the word of the Lord that those who believed and served Jesus at the time when Jesus returned to this earth would not experience death like Enoch and Elijah, but would ascend to heaven and live forever without dying.
When the Lord comes again, the Lord Himself prophesied that this world would be very difficult and chaotic spiritually, socially, morally and environmentally. It can be said that it is similar to the days of Elijah. What was the time of Elijah?
It was a time when idolatry was rampant, people were spiritually and morally lax, and Queen Jezebel threatened to kill Elijah because he had destroyed all the priests of the foreign gods she had brought on Mount Carmel
However, the fact that God allowed Elijah, who believed in, served, and followed Jehovah God only in such an environment, without experiencing death and immediately ascending to heaven gives us a strong challenge to live in this world with the same faith as Elijah.
Although we live in an era in which the world is becoming more and more chaotic, dark and evil spiritually, morally, culturally, and environmentally, I hope that you and I will keep the faith and follow the Holy Trinity uprightly like Elijah.
So, even if the Lord comes again while we are alive, I bless you in the name of the Lord that we can all ascend to heaven like Enoch and Elijah.
Today's text is the last scene of the Gospel of Luke, recorded by Luke, the doctor who wrote the Gospel of Luke and the Acts of the Apostles. Let's read verses 50-51 again.
“When he had led them out to the vicinity of Bethany, he lifted up his hands and blessed them. While he was blessing them, he left them and was taken up into heaven.” (Luke 24:50-51).
The gospel that began with the incarnation of Jesus is ending with the ascension of Jesus. Jesus’ earthly ministry is completely finished.
However, what we should note here is the appearance of Jesus when he ascended into heaven, saying, “He lifted up his hands and blessed them, and when he blessed them, he left them and was taken up into heaven.”
It is that Jesus’ final appearance in the flesh – of course, he is always with us in spirit – but that is the image of blessing his disciples.
I heard a pastor say what was the first thing Jesus should have done after he was resurrected? If it were me, I would go to the high priest Pilate, etc. He scolded me saying, “You shouldn’t live like that.” “Look, didn’t I really come back to life, would you still not believe me?” I would have given them a blow, but that the Lord never did
For 40 days after his resurrection, Jesus concentrated on his disciples, comforted them, restored the first impression of meeting the Lord again, reminded them of the Bible and the words of the kingdom of God, and used them to strengthen and equip them spiritually
A typical example is that to Peter, who denied the Lord three times, the Lord asked Peter three times if he loved me and said, “Feed my sheep,” and we know that he restored Peter spiritually.
And then finally, ‘When I go to heaven, the Father will send you the Holy Spirit. Do not leave Jerusalem and tell him to wait. Then receive the Holy Spirit and be empowered to preach the gospel, make disciples, and be my witnesses.’
After saying this, he raised his hands toward the disciples, blessed them, and ascended to heaven.
As a pastor, I also raise my hands and bless you when I pray at the end of the service. Whenever that happens, I bless you with all my heart so that they can truly live according to the Word and receive blessings from God according to the Word.
Even though my feelings are the same, how would our Lord feel? Our Jesus truly loves and wants to bless His disciples. They were not good disciples. They were disciples with many shortcomings and shortcomings. Still, the Lord blesses them, so are we. But the Lord wants to bless us He wants us to be transformed He wants us to enjoy the spiritual blessings of heaven
See Ephesians 1:3
“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ.” (Ephesians 1:3).
Therefore, the Lord wants us to enjoy all these spiritual blessings in heaven and to be filled with the Holy Spirit so that we can go out into the world to preach the gospel, become the light of a dark world, become the salt of a world that has lost its taste, and become a channel of blessing.
Christianity is not a religion of curses It is a religion of life, peace and blessings Jesus died on the cross and rose again to save us and bless us
Therefore, the devil is deceiving you to think, “I am not helping God forsaken me, I am nothing.”
We must always think, “God loves me, Jesus saves me and blesses me.” And I hope you will live by trusting in the Lord, believing and proclaiming the words, “I can do everything through him who gives me strength.” (Philippians 4:13).
One last thing to think about is that I said earlier that the ascension of Jesus is the complete completion of His earthly ministry.
Then, what does Jesus do when he goes to heaven? Because Jesus has now completed all his missions on earth, did he go to rest in heaven? No. Ascension The Bible says that this is the beginning of the Lord's new work in heaven.
It was the first sending the Holy Spirit to the disciples to the church. The Lord poured out the Holy Spirit like a fiery wind on the disciples who were praying in Mark's upper room on the day of Pentecost 10 days after He ascended to heaven.
Since then, the church has been able to revive strongly.
And what is the Lord doing? The Bible tells us that the Lord continues to pray for us and prepares a place for us in heaven.
In Romans 8:4, we read, “Who is he that condemns? Christ Jesus, who died--more than that, who was raised to life--is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us.” (Romans 8:34).
The Bible teaches that Jesus is interceding for us.
Also, in John 14, we read, “In my Father's house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.” (John 14:2-3).
The Lord is making a house for us to live in heaven, and when that is done, the Lord will come back to this world and receive the above as the Lord and let us live where the Lord is. Hallelujah.
Beloved, it is Jesus who came to this world in a human body and shed His blood on the cross to forgive our sins and give us eternal life.
For this alone, we are really so thankful and dreary, but Jesus, who ascended to heaven and ascended to the throne of God the Son of His original glory, continues to pray for us and is preparing to provide a place for us to dwell in heaven. How grateful and honored?
Beloved, if we truly know the great grace and love of the Lord, we will have to love the Lord more and believe more while we live on this earth.
Also, we will have to live more diligently witnessing the Lord to those who do not know Him.
I believe that this is the true life of those who believe in the cross, resurrection, and ascension of Jesus, and the beautiful life of believers who are awake and waiting for the Lord to come again.
I pray in the name of the Lord that you and I all live this blessed life.
