January 1, 2023
“Onesimus changed from useless to useful”
“I appeal to you for my son Onesimus, who became my son while I was in chains. Formerly he was useless to you, but now he has become useful both to you and to me. I am sending him--who is my very heart--back to you.”(Philemon1:10-12)
As you know, the apostle Paul sent many letters to the churches.
Representatively, there are Romans sent to the Church of Rome, 1 and 2 Corinthians sent to the Church of Corinth, Galatians sent to the Church of Galatia, and Ephesians to the Church of Ephesus, as well as Philippians, Colossians, and 1 and 2 Thessalonians.
However, some of Paul's letters are addressed to individuals rather than to the church community.
That is 1 and 2 Timothy, Titus, and Philemon, which we read today.
Philemon, who is receiving Paul's letter today, was a man who was converted through Paul's evangelism, and he was the leader of the church in Colossians.
He was a great spiritual leader who was loved and praised by Paul.
In verse 1, it is introduced as To Philemon our beloved brother and fellow worker,” (Philemon 1:1).
And in verses 4 through 7
“I thank my God always, making mention of you in my prayers,
because I hear of your love and of the faith which you have toward the Lord Jesus and toward all the saints;
and I pray that the fellowship of your faith may become effective through the knowledge of every good thing which is in you for Christ's sake.
For I have come to have much joy and comfort in your love, because the hearts of the saints have been refreshed through you, brother.” (Philemon 1:4-7).
It can be seen that Philemon was a man of very mature faith who was praised not only by Paul but also by the Colossian church community.
But the reason Paul wrote the letter to Philemon was because of a man named Onesimus.
Onesimus was originally a slave in the house of Philemon.
But he stole some of Philemon's property and ran away.
Then he went to Rome, the largest city at the time, and there he heard the gospel through Paul, who was in prison under house arrest, and repented and believed in Jesus.
And while receiving Paul's teachings, he grew in faith and also wanted to live a life of testifying the gospel of the Lord together while serving Paul as his spiritual father.
And to Paul, Onesimus became like a spiritual son.
Another spiritual son like Timothy and Titus.
So, in verse 10, it is expressed as “I appeal to you for my son Onesimus, who became my son while I was in chains”.
Onesimus was the son born of Paul through the gospel and the love of the Lord.
There are many kinds of callings in this world
There is a way to study here, so I call you to study.
Also, there is a way to earn money. Come to earn money. There is a call to become a soldier and be loyal to the country, and there is also a call to immigrate to our country.
In response to these various calls, people become office workers, businessmen, civil servants, politicians, soldiers, students, study abroad, and emigrate to foreign countries like us.
This kind of calling becomes a special opportunity in our lives and brings about great changes in our lives.
But in all life, there is no call more precious than God's call.
This is because God's call is a powerful call that changes a person's eternal value.
“for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,” (Romans 3:23).
“For the wages of sin is death,” (Romans 6:23).
The Bible says that all people are sinners. Even those whom people call saints are all sinners except for Jesus.
It doesn't matter whether it's a big sin or a small sin. All sins will bear the fruit of death. This is our destiny in life.
That is why the Bible says that all people are physically alive but spiritually dead.
“you were dead in your transgressions and sins,” (Ephesians 2:1)
“when we were dead in transgressions” (Ephesians 2:5)
think about it
There is no change for the dead. Go to the funeral.
They put cosmetics on the dead and dress them in nice clothes, but the dead are still dead. there is no change whatsoever
But many lives on this earth will tell
"I passed a certain exam, graduated from that school, got a job at that company, got that license, got that professional job, got that doctor's degree, became a professor, started that business, met that person, and my life changed."
But these are all things done within the realm of spiritual death.
Nothing of the world breathes new life into those who are spiritually dead in their relationship with God.
However, when our God calls our lives through Jesus Christ, if we hear His voice and respond with faith, then those who have been spiritually dead will come to life.
It is not about fixing one or two places. It is to completely replace the impossible and replace it with a new one, and to completely replace the worthless and change it into something valuable.
So the apostle Paul
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!” (2 Corinthians 5:17).
And the prophet Ezekiel is saying that when we obey God's calling, a new spirit and a new heart are given to us.
“I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.” (Ezekiel 36:26).
Onesimus received God's call through Paul, responded to the gospel earnestly, met Jesus, who shed his blood for Onesimus's sins on the cross, and received a new life and eternal life.
Yes everyone, whether you were a slave or a failure, it doesn't matter how you lived in the past.
Anyone who hears and comes out of the voice of God calling in Jesus Christ is born again into a new life. Guys, the past doesn't matter in Jesus. Don't ask about the past.
The power that anyone can be newly changed is in Jesus and in the gospel
There was a man in an American prison
He was wrongly put in prison because of someone.
A resentment formed in his heart in prison and he was determined to kill that person with a gun when he got out.
When he came home from prison, his wife had left the house and only his two sons were playing.
He felt sorry for the children and thought that he should leave them at church, so he took them to church.
He planned to take revenge on that person after leaving the children with a gun hidden in his chest. At that time, a pastor named Thompson came to the church and was leading a revival meeting.
He had no choice but to sit behind the church because the church was having a meeting. Then he heard the gospel preached by the pastor.
He heard about the love, salvation, and forgiveness of the cross of Jesus Christ through Pastor Thompson and shed tears of repentance.
After the worship service, at the time of reception and decision, he took his two sons to the pulpit, laid down his gun, and confessed with tears in his eyes.
“After leaving my two children at church, I tried to go and kill a person. But from now on, I will not hold on to a gun and live with grudges, but will live by holding on to the Word of God and the Bible. I will live by serving Jesus.”
Beloved friends, God's call, the gospel call, has this powerful ability.
It has the power to change our lives and breathe new life into them.
In a way, Onesimus might have run away after stealing his master's money in search of freedom because he hated the life of a slave.
However, after hearing the gospel through Paul, he now voluntarily served Paul, who was imprisoned, as his spiritual father and became a servant of the gospel serving God.
The gospel changed him like this
Paul must have been so grateful, proud, and happy to see Onesimus' transformation.
But he couldn't keep Onesimus by his side.
After hearing about what Onesimus had done wrong in the past, Paul sent him back to Philemon, Onesimus' master, to ask for forgiveness, and then to ask for permission sent Onesimus back to serve Paul himself.
This comes in verses 13 and 14.
“I would have liked to keep him with me so that he could take your place in helping me while I am in chains for the gospel.
But I did not want to do anything without your consent, so that any favor you do will be spontaneous and not forced.” (Philemon 1:13-14).
At that time, the population of the Roman Empire was 120 million, and half of them, 60 million, were slaves. Slaves belonged to their masters, and their lives depended on their masters.
Therefore, according to the law at the time, it did not matter even if Onesimus was killed by Philemon. As introduced earlier, Philemon was a spiritually mature man who was a source of strength to Paul and was loved and respected by the Colossian saints.
However, Onesimus inflicted financial damage on Philemon.
This is the case in verses 18 and 19.
“If he has done you any wrong or owes you anything, charge it to me.
I, Paul, am writing this with my own hand. I will pay it back” (Philemon 1:18-19).
That's why Paul says of him in verse 11, "He used to be of no avail to you."
However, this Onesimus was changed after hearing the gospel, and he may have been useless and harmful to Philemon in the past, but now he has become a very precious witness of the gospel and a very beneficial person to me.
Paul says
Verses 11-12
“Formerly he was useless to you, but now he has become useful both to you and to me. I am sending him--who is my very heart--back to you.” (Philemon 1:11-12).
Paul refers to Onesimus as “my heart” in verse 12.
Here, the word confidant means heart, in other words, the apostle Paul means, “I cherish and love as my heart.”
I think it is an expression that clearly tells how much Onesimus was a great source of strength and comfort to Paul.
It is said that Onesimus not only received such recognition and praise from Paul, but also became a respected bishop of the church at Ephesus, which later became the center of world missions.
Judging by this, it seems that Philemon not only forgave Onesimus as Paul requested, but also freed him from slavery so that he could serve Paul well while he was in prison in Rome.
A runaway slave, a thief, a sinner, who should have lived away from people's eyes all his life, he heard the gospel through Paul and became a child of God. He became the spiritual son of the apostle Paul.
And he became a strong co-worker of the apostle Paul.
He also became a spiritual brother and co-worker with his master, Philemon, who forgave him in the faith.
The useless before has now become a useful one. This is the power of the gospel, this is the power of Christianity.
Everyone, let me briefly introduce missionary Hajin Choi.
Missionary Hajin Choi's testimony always challenges me and gives me grace.
He was originally a believer from his mother's womb, but he lived a life that was like a spiritual barren land. As a Ph.D. from KAIST in Korea, he was a gentle and intelligent professional scientist and researcher during the day, but at night he was swept away by the waves of entertainment at Yuseong, in Daejeon, and indulged in worldly pleasures.
He went to church since he was young, but he had never read the Bible once properly and had never preached the gospel.
But one day, the question and thought, “Can I really live like this?” came into his mind.
And he suddenly wanted to read the Bible, and the words that struck his heart while reading were the words of Genesis 11:32 and 12:1 “Terah lived 205 years, and he died in Haran. The LORD had said to Abram, "Leave your country, your people and your father's household and go to the land I will show you." (Genesis 11:32-12:1).
And among those words, the word “he died” in verse 32 strongly touched his heart.
He thought that this would be his life, where he would die in vain after living in success and worldly pleasures, and finally heard the voice of God telling Abraham to leave there as the word given to him, as shown in Genesis 12:1.
And as he sincerely repented, accepted Jesus, and prayed, he began to live a new life.
After receiving the grace, he wanted to evangelize, so he bought a meal for a junior researcher at work, treated him well, and continued to pray. One day, he preached the gospel. But that junior researcher heard the gospel, accepted Jesus, and believed in Jesus. So he was so happy that he preached the gospel even more diligently.
Then, in 1993, he became a Chinese missionary at the age of early 30's.
He was supposed to stay for 3 years at first and then come back, but he is still working as a missionary.
Missionary Hajin Choi devoted herself to preaching the gospel to 400 million middle and high school students in mainland China.
Because in China, the law says that people under the age of 18 cannot attend church.
So, through missionary Ha-jin Choi, who decided to do academy missionary work, prayed only with faith, established International School, and has been living as an academy missionary ever since, many students and people came to believe in Jesus and lived a changed life.
I'm sorry everyone, but just because a person was a believer from birth and has been to church for a long time does not necessarily mean that they are automatically changed and born again as children of God.
Each of us must individually respond to God's call to salvation in Jesus Christ, repent, and stand before God in faith.
We must hear the voice of God calling us. We must hear the voice of the Lord who died on the cross for our sins and was resurrected.
“"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16).
“I tell you the truth, a time is coming and has now come when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God and those who hear will live.” (John 5:25).
And you must respond to that voice with faith. Then you will be born again from a sinner to a righteous person and gain a new life as a child of God.
And our God is the God who calls the saved children to a place of holy life and holy ministry.
Now, we believe that we must obey and respond to God's call to the holy life and holy ministry.
At that time, I believe that our faith will grow healthy and we will live victoriously in this world full of sins and temptations, giving glory to God.
When you meet Jesus, when you meet the Gospel, changes will surely happen. I believe that changes will definitely happen in a good direction.
I hope we all become the protagonists of the blessed change experiencing the good change and the good change.
dear ones
the new year has dawned
As you know, living in a new house, driving a new car, and wearing new clothes just because the new year has arrived does not mean you become a new person or a new life.
I believe that only when our spirits are reborn in Jesus and our spirits and hearts become new spirits and new hearts can we change into a new and blessed life.
In the new year, I hope we all hear the voice of God calling in Jesus and respond to it like Missionary Hajin Choi like Onesimus.
So, I hope that all of us who have not yet been born again will not only be born again, but also live a life of value, a life of benefit to the Lord, the church, and the world.
.
I hope you will live a life of saving many souls and making disciples with the passion for the gospel like the apostle Paul.
Also, like Philemon, the spiritual leader of the Church of Colosse, I bless you and I to live a life of mature children of God through love, tolerance, service, and forgiveness.
