주일 설교(SERMON) 잠언(Proverbs) 6:6-11
January 8, 2023
“The Tragedy of the Lazy Person”
Guys, the words of Proverbs we read today are, in a word, words about wisdom.
What kind of wisdom is it? Wisdom to live in the world, wisdom to live life rightly. In other words, it tells us how to have a relationship with God, how to have a relationship with people, and how to have a relationship with money for a right life.
Therefore, if you read Proverbs well, you can learn the wisdom of life.
However, one thing I feel after reading Proverbs is that some important truths are being conveyed repeatedly while repeating them.
Proverbs, for example, teaches many times the evils of pride and the importance of humility.
And the importance of words, that is, language, has been taught many times, and the harm of laziness and the importance of diligence, which we read today, are also taught in many places.
In view of this, I think that the Proverbs writer emphasizes and teaches because these truths are so important.
Yes, as we live our lives and lead a life of faith, the really important issues are “the problem of humility and arrogance,” “the importance of language life,” and “the problem of laziness and diligence.”
This is an important issue that it is not an exaggeration to say that it determines the success or failure of our lives.
Today I want to talk about the last of these three important topics, “The Problem of Laziness and Industriousness.”
I bless you that the Holy Spirit will be with me as I preach the Word and the hearts of you who listen to me and give me realization and challenge.
First, the Bible says that the lazy should learn from the ant.
Verse 6: "Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider its ways and be wise!" (Proverbs 6:6).
First of all, I said that you are lazy.
Who among us is not lazy?
If there is someone who thinks I am a very diligent person when I think of myself
Either he really is a great man or he is greatly mistaken
Folks, if I had to name the representative of the most diligent person in history, I could name Jesus.
The Lord was sincere, diligent, and faithful in all things.
The Bible tells us that when he worked as a carpenter, served his parents, he worked hard and served his public life, preached the gospel of God and accomplished the work of healing, he got up early in the morning to pray, sometimes praying all night long, and worked diligently.
Therefore, there will be very few of us who live as diligently as Jesus did. Therefore, we all have our own diligent aspects, but we also have a lazy side. First of all, we have to admit that I am lazy and listen to these words.
According to today's text, the lazy man goes to the ant to see and learn.
Ants are diligent insects from ancient times. Their society is said to consist of male ants, female ants, neutral worker ants and soldier ants.
Female and male ants, which are relatively few in number, do not do much work, but worker ants with a large number do most of the work.
According to the report of entomologists, one worker ant works from six in the morning to ten at night. They work 16 hours a day
And it is said that such labor is mainly done voluntarily, rather than forcedly by the mighty ants.
Also, depending on the region, it is said that ants living in the cold regions go into hibernation when winter comes.
They do not eat during hibernation, so there is no need to prepare food.
However, ants in warmer climates do not hibernate, so they must save food when food is plentiful.
Palestinian ants also do not hibernate in the winter, so in today's text, they are diligently collecting food in the summer.
“It has no commander, no overseer or ruler, yet it stores its provisions in summer and gathers its food at harvest.” (Proverbs 6:7-8).
Folks, lazy people don't prepare for the future
But a diligent ant-like person is a person who prepares for the future.
It is to prepare diligently for the future without missing the given time
In fact, our teens and 20s are a period of preparation for the remaining 40-50 years of our lives. It is a period of diligently accumulating knowledge and skills, polishing skills, and honing character. And before you retire, it's wisdom to prepare for the post-retirement and old age years.
But we Christians are not just people who live in this world.
These are the people who will live forever
Therefore, you must know how to prepare for that eternal future as well.
The Bible speaks of the eternal world after death
Therefore, you must know how to prepare for the afterlife.
We must know how to prepare to meet Jesus who is to come again. This is true wisdom. We must learn from the ants who prepare for the future.
Second, it says that lazy people like to sleep.
verses 9 and 10
“How long will you lie there, you sluggard? When will you get up from your sleep? A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest-” (Proverbs 6:9-10).
Guys, look at Psalm 127:2: “ for he grants sleep to those he loves.”
God said he gives sleep to those he loves
Sleep is therefore very precious. By sleeping, fatigue is relieved, rested, and energy is restored.
But you have no idea how hard it is to have insomnia where someone can't sleep even though he or she want to.
So pray to God for a good night's sleep
But enjoying sleep and liking to sleep too much is a problem
There is a sleep time that suits you. You should sleep in moderation.
But sleeping too much is a waste of time.
Wake up, eat, exercise, study and work. Spend time being productive and creative
In particular, the Bible warns against falling asleep spiritually.
There are many words that wake up those who are sleeping spiritually.
After waking up, eating the Word, that is, reading the Word, meditating, studying, then praying, going out to preach the gospel and doing what we had to do, but we lazily slept and did not work for the Lord.
Listen to the words of the Lord in Mark 13:33
“Be on guard! Be alert! You do not know when that time will come.” (Mark 13:33).
And verse 35
“"Therefore keep watch because you do not know when the owner of the house will come back--whether in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or at dawn.” (Mark 13:35).
In Mark 13:33 to the last verse 37, the Lord repeated the word 'stay awake' four times, emphasizing it.
Guys, this is to say that many believers are sleeping spiritually in the last days.
Those who do not believe are spiritually dead.
Sleeping spiritually refers to the lazy among believers. You must wake up.
Also, listen carefully to Ephesians 5:14.
“This is why it is said: "Wake up, O sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you."” (Ephesians 5:14).
What does this words mean?
“Those who claim to believe but are asleep spiritually, wake up, those who love to sleep.”
And I believe that it means ‘live a life that revives the spiritually dead by receiving the light of Christ’s grace and the truth of life’.
Third, it says that poverty comes to the lazy.
Verse 11: “and poverty will come on you like a bandit and scarcity like an armed man.” (Mark 6:11).
Everyone, this is Proverbs 10:4
“Lazy hands make a man poor, but diligent hands bring wealth.” (Proverbs 10:4).
Also, it says, "A sluggard does not plow in season; so at harvest time he looks but finds nothing." (Proverbs 20:4).
In the Palestinian region, it rains a lot from the end of September to December, which is the autumn season, so they plow the fields and sow seeds.
But at this time, if you are lazy and do not plow the field or sow the seeds, you will not be able to harvest.
It also says, “Do not love sleep or you will grow poor; stay awake and you will have food to spare.” (Proverbs 20:13).
If you like to sleep and are lazy, you will be poor
Therefore, open your eyes. Open your eyes and wake up.
It is to work hard. It says that if you do, you will have plenty of food.
But this applies equally to the spiritual principle. It also applies to our life of faith. Everyone, you must wake up from your spiritual sleep, open your eyes, and do your work. What is it? You must do the work of God.
Once the disciples of Jesus asked
“Then they asked him, "What must we do to do the works God requires?"” (John 6:28)
At this time, Jesus answered
“Jesus answered, "The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent."” (John 6:29).
This word means to live a life of faith without complicating it, i.e. worship diligently, pray diligently, diligently live a life of preaching and evangelism, diligently do a volunteer life, etc.
In other words, it means that to truly believe in Jesus well is to do God's work well.
But what about the reality, everyone? Among those who go to church and say they believe, there are people who work really hard, diligently, and actively plan to make money in this world or their hobbies. But how many people are lazy and passive in their religious life?
We need to look back on this. That is why these people are not spiritually rich. They are poor spiritually and not mature. They need to wake up spiritually quickly.
If the work of the world is not sinful, just as our Lord worked hard as a carpenter and served his parents, we must work hard as well.
But at the same time, we must do really well in our religious life as like Jesus. We must be diligent. We must prepare for the future.
Not only after retirement or old age, but more importantly, you must know how to prepare for the eternal world after death.
Also, if you profess to believe but continue to lead a lazy life and fall asleep spiritually or like to sleep, you may eventually hear the voice of the Lord's rebuke:
This is Matthew 25:26.
The servant who received one talent did not think to use the talent well with gratitude, but just buried it in the ground.
God has given each of us gifts, talents, wisdom, and abilities.
We must take this and use it diligently for the glory of God. But this servant was lazy and was rebuked.
“His master replied, 'You wicked, lazy servant! So you knew that I harvest where I have not sown and gather where I have not scattered seed?” (Matthew 25:26)
He also took the one talent he had and gave it to the one who had the ten talents. And it is said that he was cast out into outer darkness, and there was weeping and gnashing of teeth.
Believers, if you are lazy in your religious life, you will miss grace, but you can also ruin God's work. You must be alert and must be diligent
Everyone, I remember hearing the late Pastor Ok Han-heum lamenting while preaching on this text, wondering how many believers would lose their salvation on the last day because of being lazy, or would be scolded instead of praised.
Beloved, Saint Benedict once said, "Idleness is the enemy of the soul."
And a man named Ednald Spencer said, "Indolence is the nanny of sin."
The harm that laziness does to our souls is great, but many people are unaware of its seriousness and will not try to change.
But today we heard. I believe that God loves us and gives us a chance to try something different in the new year.
I see myself sometimes falling into the temptation of laziness and being lazy.
I am also lacking a lot. We are all lacking in fact.
However, I believe that God is the God who knows his own inadequacies, knows his weaknesses, prays to God, and gives strength to those who hold on to God.
I hope that we will all diligently do better in our faith life from the beginning of the new year so that we can all be praised by the Lord on the last day.
