주일설교(Sunday Sermon) 왕상(1 Kings) 18:37-38
“Elijah and the Fire of God” 2022. 8. 14.
Answer me, O LORD, answer me, so these people will know that you, O LORD, are God, and that you are turning their hearts back again."
Then the fire of the LORD fell and burned up the sacrifice, the wood, the stones and the soil, and also licked up the water in the trench.(1 Kings18:37-38)
Today, I talked about Elisha last week among the most powerful prophets in the Old Testament, Elijah and Elisha, which I talked about last week.
Today I want to tell you about Elijah.
Elijah was a little different from other people of God from his appearance.
For example, Moses met God in front of a burning thorny tree on Mount Horeb and was called by God and received a mission.
But Elijah doesn't have that.
In 1 Kings 17:1, the first scene of Elijah in the Bible, it says:
“Now Elijah the Tishbite, from Tishbe in Gilead, said to Ahab, "As the LORD, the God of Israel, lives, whom I serve, there will be neither dew nor rain in the next few years except at my word."” (1 Kings 17:1).
If you look here, Elijah goes to King Ahab, the king of northern Israel at the time, and talks to him.
“As the LORD, the God of Israel, whom I serve, lives, there will be neither rain nor dew for many years without my word.”
“God said it would not rain in the future, so repent, or God said that it will not rain for years to come”
If Elijah had said to Ahab,
Strangely enough, the Bible gives the impression that Elijah would not let the rain fall.
But who has the power to make it rain and guide the weak man? Only God can do that.
In any case, King Ahab must have been shocked to hear Elijah’s words, and he may have thought, ‘What kind of madman is this?
But it hasn't actually rained for three years after that.
It says that there was a great famine in northern Israel, especially Samaria.
“After a long time, in the third year, the word of the LORD came to Elijah: "Go and present yourself to Ahab, and I will send rain on the land."
So Elijah went to present himself to Ahab. Now the famine was severe in Samaria,” (1 Kings 18:1- 2)
A lot of rain is a scary thing, but it's also a scary thing not to rain. Both are terrifyingly life threatening.
As you know, how much damage was caused by heavy rains in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province this time?
But, as you know, in Europe as well, due to the extreme heat wave, the UK, which used to be hot at 20 degrees in summer, is experiencing the sweltering heat as it is approaching 40 degrees Celsius.
Due to this heat wave, there is a lot of damage from big wildfires in Spain and France, and there is little rain in Europe, so there is a big difficulty due to famine.
For three years, famine struck northern Israel.
There would not have been enough water to drink, and there would have been not enough water for farming, water for household use, and water to feed the livestock. So three years have passed.
How foolish this king Ahab is
At this point, shouldn't he think of the God Elijah spoke of and return to God's word?
Yet he did not understand
The Bible tells us that the king, together with Obadiah, who was in charge of the royal palace, searched for water sources and all the streams in the palace to find water for the horses and mules to feed them.
1 When famines and hardships come into our lives, interpret and deal with their causes
Folks, we can meet famine in our lives
However, if the famine is the refinement that God wants to train and strengthen me, we must endure with unconditional faith.
Just as Joseph endured 13 years of slavery by faith, 2 years in prison.
However, if it is a punishment given by God for my sins and my faults, no matter how much I go to anyone and ask for help, there will be no answer.
The spiritual famine will get worse. We must return to the Word.
We must go to God and bow down. We must find out where we have gone wrong through the Word and repent
“Remember the height from which you have fallen! Repent and do the things you did at first.” (Revelation 2:5).
I believe that when we return to the Word, return to God, repent, restore our first love, and seek God's help, the way to solve problems will be opened.
King Ahab is such a fool, but God is merciful, patient, and always waiting for him to return to God by giving him a chance.
Perhaps even if it didn't rain for just one more year, many people would have died.
So God decided to stop here and told Elijah, 'I will make it rain,' and commanded him to go to King Ahab. Then he met King Ahab. However, King Ahab suffered a famine for three years, but he did not understand it at all and did not repent at all. Elijah was with God for three years and his faith grew stronger, but King Ahab did not change for three years.
Everyone, how have you been during the 3 years of the Corona Pandemic?
It can be said that it is a natural phenomenon, but during this corona period, which has the meaning of God's discipline for this sinful humankind, did you return to God's word, repent for not living according to God's will, and your faith grew stronger as you prayed more?
Or did you live like King Ahab without any change in your spiritual numbness?
Or did you live a life that went back and forth between Jehovah God and Baal God and between God and the world, just like the people of Northern Israel at the time?
I hope you will look back, and even if you have lived a somewhat shameful life, I bless you in the name of the Lord that you will be raised as a person of faith like Elijah from now on
God was going to send rain on Israel, but before that, he decided to show King Ahab and the people of Israel that God is alive and that He is God through Elijah. That is the famous confrontation on Mount Carmel.
In any case, Elijah, who met King Ahab again after three years in this way, made a proposal: to gather all 450 prophets of Baal and 400 prophets of Asherah of Israel to Mount Carmel.
850 prophets gathered at Mount Carmel, and many Israelites gathered to see what was going on.
And Elijah suggested, 'Get two bulls for us. Let them choose one for themselves, and let them cut it into pieces and put it on the wood but not set fire to it. I will prepare the other bull and put it on the wood but not set fire to it.
Then you call on the name of your god, and I will call on the name of the LORD. The god who answers by fire--he is God."
And the 450 prophets of Baal, who had absolute advantage in numerical terms, first cut a calf on their altar and placed it on their altar and began to pray, calling on the name of Baal, 'Answer, Baal, Baal, send down the fire. Show me that you are true God'
They shouted loudly, but Baal did not answer.
They cried out madly, even piercing them with swords and spears, causing them to bleed, but Baal didn't respond.
Then Elijah finally appears in verse 30.
“Then Elijah said to all the people, "Come here to me." They came to him, and he repaired the altar of the LORD, which was in ruins.” (1 Kings 18:30).
Now it's Elijah's turn. But Elijah brings the people closer and shows them something.
It was the rebuilding of the fallen altar of Jehovah.
The Bible does not say on which altar the priests of Baal placed the calf. I don't know if it was the altar of Baal that had already been built on Mount Carmel before, or it was hastily built that day.
However, one thing is certain, there had been an altar to the Lord on Mount Carmel before, but because idolatry was so severe and no one offered sacrifices to God, the altar was in ruins
So Elijah built the altar again with the twelve stones representing the twelve tribes of Israel.
It seems to have been done with the heart of praying that the 12 tribes of Israel, not only the 10 northern tribes of Israel but also the 2 southern tribes of Judah, would become one again in the faith to serve Jehovah God and become a nation that glorifies God.
But what is really important here is to rebuild the broken altar of Jehovah.
2 In order for the gates of heaven to open and God to respond with fire, our broken altar must be restored to worship.
In order for God to open the gates of heaven, respond with fire, and pour out grace on us, there is something that must be done first.
It is to restore the broken altar, which means that our worship must be restored.
The Bible says that human beings were created to worship and praise God.
Therefore, when anyone bows down before the living God and worships, the doors of heaven will open, God's grace will come, and our relationship with God will be restored and improved.
If everything seems to be going well in your life, but the worship of God is broken, it's all broken.
Prosperity can be evil in the sight of God, or it can be pride.
However, even if it seems that everything is not going well in life, if you meet God through worship, you can overcome everything.
Therefore, the broken altar must be rebuilt.
If there is a broken worship service, it must be restored.
We often think of listening to sermons when we worship, but true worship begins with praise.
Worship includes these devotions, from praise offered out of love to God, to gifts offered out of prayer and thanksgiving.
In addition, true worship is not only worship held at church on Sundays, but worship that is always offered in my life, and offering my body to God as a living sacrifice is true worship.
“Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God--this is your spiritual act of worship.” (Romans 12:1).
Elijah rebuilt the broken altar, built a tree on it, took a calf on it and poured water on it.
After pouring water into the four buckets and making a ditch around the altar three times to fill the ditch with water, He finally pray earnestly to God.
And God heard that prayer and answered it with fire. Verse 38
“Then the fire of the LORD fell and burned up the sacrifice, the wood, the stones and the soil, and also licked up the water in the trench.” (1 Kings 18:38).
3 We need God's fire in times of spiritual darkness
Everyone, as I meditated on these words, I came to think that what Elijah needed the most was the fire of God, working in a spiritually dark land in the land of Israel, where idolatry was rampant.
The time was already getting dark because the prophets of Baal had prayed until evening to send a fire to Baal, but failed.
And Elijah spent his time rebuilding the collapsed altar and pouring water on it.
So it was in the evening or at night that the fire of God fell on Elijah's altar. Imagine you guys
In the dimly lit altar, the fire of God falls on the sacrifice and burns it.
God is speaking to King Ahab, the idolatrous prophets, and the people of Israel who are living in sin in the spiritual darkness.
“I am not darkness, but light; I am not a lie, I am the truth; therefore, return to me.”
That is why 1 John says, “God is light; in him there is no darkness at all.” (1 John 1:5), and Jesus also said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” (John 8:12)
Everyone, on the day of Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit came upon Mark's upper room, it came like a rushing and strong wind, and it came like tongues of fire. The Holy Spirit came like fire.
fire glows and burns
The fire of the Holy Spirit warms our hearts and burns our sins and hypocrisy and leads us into light and truth.
Everyone, what did Elisha, who had to carry out the mission of a prophet after his teacher Elijah, in an age when it was still spiritually dark, before the teacher ascended to heaven?
That's right
“Let me inherit a double portion of your spirit” (2 Kings 2:9).
Elisha sought the filling of the Holy Spirit
Yes, everyone, these days are really dark spiritually.
The time of the Lord's return is drawing nearer
Many people do not know what is true or what is false, they do not know who is the true God or who is fake, and they are living without knowing where the true way of salvation is.
At this time, we must seek the fire of heaven. We must earnestly seek the fire of God like Elijah. That is the fire of the Holy Spirit.
In England, which was spiritually dark, John Wesley and John Whitefield, who received the fire of the Holy Spirit, arose and led England to the kingdom of the gospel.
In 1907, the great revival movement in Pyongyang took place in the spiritually dark Korean land, and as the fire of the Holy Spirit fell on Pyongyang, a spiritual revival took place in the Korean land.
The Korean church has risen like a fire. But unfortunately, the fire of the Holy Spirit seems to be fading even in our Korean church, not to mention the British church.
this is really worrisome
Therefore, dear friends, we should all rebuild the broken altar and pray earnestly toward heaven like Elijah.
'Father, please send fire. The God who brought down fire on Elijah's altar. The God who poured the fire of the Holy Spirit on Mark's upper room. On the altar of our worship, on our hearts, on our church and home. Lord, let the fire of the Holy Spirit fall upon all the churches in our country and in the nations.”
and we will have to pray
So, just as the people who had left God returned to God when the fire of God came on the altar of Elijah, when each one of us lives as a person of the fire of the Holy Spirit and a person of faith in the Word and prayer, through us I believe that many people will turn to God through Jesus.
