“In the name of Jesus Christ” 2022. 10. 16.
Everyone, today's text is a very famous verse, but the more we read it, the more it teaches us that the name of our Jesus has truly amazing power and authority.
I hope that through today's words, we can all deeply believe in the power and authority of the name of Jesus, use that name in our daily lives, and be me and you living enjoying the grace.
As we well know, in Acts 1 and 2, Peter and the Lord's disciples experienced a revival through the amazing presence of the Holy Spirit and the preaching of the Holy Spirit-filled Peter.
There was a revival of 3,000 people believing in Jesus.
The hearts of Peter and John, who experienced this wonderful grace and revival, must have had infinite emotions, joy, and gratitude.
And one day, at the ninth hour of prayer, they were heading to the temple. Perhaps it was to pray in the temple or to share the gospel with the people in the temple.
This is verse 1
“One day Peter and John were going up to the temple at the time of prayer--at three in the afternoon.” (Acts 3:1).
But then, Peter and John meet a beggar. Unfortunately, he was born with a congenital disability that prevented him from walking.
verses 2 and 3
“Now a man crippled from birth was being carried to the temple gate called Beautiful, where he was put every day to beg from those going into the temple courts.
When he saw Peter and John about to enter, he asked them for money.” (Acts 3:2-3).
With a pitiful expression on his face, he must have said, “Gentle mens, if you have some change, have mercy on me and help me.”
Then how did the apostles react? Verse 4
“Peter looked straight at him, as did John. Then Peter said, "Look at us!"” (Acts 3:4).
Instead of sayng this, 'Yeah, I'm sorry you're so handicapped. We don't have much money right now. Even if it's small, buy some food with this money and eat it." They said, "Look at us."
Still, thankful for his attention, he looked at them.
This is verse 5
“So the man gave them his attention, expecting to get something from them.” (Acts 3:5).
When Peter said to this handicapped beggar, ‘Look at us,’ he could mean, in other words, ‘Look at our faces, especially our eyes.’
This symbolizes our respect for you as a precious person in the image of God just like us.
At that time, in Judea, the prevailing culture was that people who were born with a disability were cursed by God.
Therefore, the cursed life could not look into the faces and eyes of ordinary people.
They always had to crouch down with their heads bowed and their loins bowed down, but Peter told him to look them.
It means to lift his head up It means to lift his face toward the sky
And when Peter saw him, he declared, verse 6
“Then Peter said, "Silver or gold I do not have, but what I have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk.” (Acts 3:6).
The first thing you should think about, what kind of eyes did Peter say to him when he looked into his eyes and proclaimed these wonderful words?
First of all, I would never have said it with a proud or showy look or tone.
Rather, I am sure that he spoke in a soft but firm tone with the eyes of Jesus, the eyes of love, and the compassionate heart of Jesus.
And we also learn one profound thing here that Peter was focusing on what he didn't have, not what he didn't have.
Peter said that I have no silver or gold.
But Peter had faith in Jesus, faith in the name of Jesus
He wanted to share that faith with him.
As I said a few weeks ago, many people tend to focus primarily on what they don't have, what's lost and what's missing, so they feel even more inferior, depressed and frustrated.
But I said we believers shouldn't.
We believe that believers should focus on what we still have and on the precious things that remain, and pray for God's grace that will work through it, and we believe that we should be grateful for it.
Everyone, Peter was not a man of money, nor was he a man of great knowledge. He was born in rural Galilee and has been a fisherman since childhood.
He didn't have anything to be proud of in the world
But he had faith in Jesus, who is more precious than any treasure in this world, and he had faith in the authority and power of the name of Jesus.
So Peter boldly said to him, “In the name of Jesus, get up and walk,” and he took his hand and got him up.
He got up, walked and jumped, and went into the temple, thanking
God and praising God.
Faith in Jesus and faith in the name of Jesus that works miracles
If any of us have nothing to boast about in the world like Peter, never be discouraged.
If we believe in Jesus, if faith and love in the name of Jesus have confidence in us
As the Apostle Paul said, “But we have this treasure in jars of clay” (2 Corinthians 4:7), we are like fragile jars of clay, but we believe that we have in us a treasure more precious than anything in the world.
Dear friends, in any case, what can we clearly learn from this incident?
It is that the name of Jesus, whom we believe in, has amazing and tremendous power and authority.
What on earth is the name of Jesus, that a person who has been unable to walk since he was born and lived as a beggar for the rest of his life in misery and despair has changed into a life where he gets up and walks, jumps, exclaims, praises and sings praises to God?
First of all, the name of Jesus is the name of salvation.
The name the angel taught Joseph is the name of Jesus.
“She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” (Matthew 1:21).
The name of Jesus is the name of salvation, which saves us from our sins, so Romans 10:13 says, “for, "Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” (Romans 10:13).
In Acts 4:12, Peter said, “Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved.” (Acts 4:12).
The only name of salvation God has given us is Jesus Christ.
Therefore, sinners must call on the name of Jesus
I believe that a sinner will receive the grace of salvation when he humbly repents of his sins in front of his cross and confesses, “Jesus, forgive my sins, have mercy on me and make me a child of God.”
And I believe that even those who have already been saved will live a victorious life every day when they call on the name of Jesus, exalt the name of Jesus, and boast and spread the name of Jesus
Second, the name of Jesus is the name of power and authority.
There is amazing power and authority in the name of Jesus.
In Daniel 7, there is a prophecy about Jesus. It is written that
“He was given authority, glory and sovereign power; all peoples, nations and men of every language worshiped him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and his kingdom is one that will never be destroyed.” (Daniel 7:14).
What this means is that God the Father has given the Son Jesus power, glory, and kingdom.
And the glory of Jesus is eternal, His power is eternal authority, His kingdom is an eternal kingdom that will never perish.
Therefore, there is authority in the name of “Jesus Christ,” which is the condensed name of all the glory, power, and kingdom that God has given to Jesus.
Eternal authority and power
So, I believe that demons and diseases will go away in front of the name.
That is why Jesus also commanded us to pray in the name of Jesus, the name of such a marvelous authority, and to cast out demons, and commanded us to lay our hands on the sick and pray in the name of Jesus.
Mark chapter 16, Jesus promised that
“And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; ... they will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well.” (Mark 16:17-18).
And in the book of Acts, this kind of thing actually happened a lot.
A typical example of this is what happened in Philippi. As we well know, Paul and Silas went to Philippi to preach the gospel, and a slave girl with a demon kept interrupting them.
So Paul proclaimed to the maidservant
“She continued doing this for many days. But Paul was greatly annoyed, and turned and said to the spirit of divination, "I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her!" And it came out at that very moment.” (Acts 16:18)
When Peter commanded in the name of Jesus, the demon inside her came out immediately.
And because of this, Paul and Silas were unfairly beaten a lot and were imprisoned, and a miracle happened when they prayed, gave thanks and sang in the name of Jesus.
A miracle happened by proclaiming and preaching to the jailer who was about to commit suicide, “They said, "Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household."” (Acts 16:31)
There was a miracle that the jailer and his family were saved by evangelizing in the name of Jesus.
All of this happened when peter used the authority of Jesus name
The president of a seminary in the United States will share the precious testimony of his experience as a missionary to Africa.
An African seminary student trained and established by this American missionary became a missionary and entered a village where there were no believers in Jesus. The village had a population of about 1,800, and the village chief was a shaman. So, when someone gets sick, this person comes and prays for everyone, and with that, all the locals listen only to the chief's words.
He evangelized for 8 years, but only three people believed in Jesus. The missionary, who was so discouraged, prays to God that he will move to another area, but God has moved him to say, 'Not yet, I will be with you, I will help you.'
He prayed until so deep into the night, and when he woke up in the morning there was a thing wrapped in a blanket in the yard of his house.
Startled, he opened something and found the chief's son lying there dying with his eyes closed and foaming.
There was a note there, and looking at it, it was written like this.
“Raise my son, because Jesus, the God you believe in, will heal every one. If my son dies, you too will die because you have been lying for eight years.”
One of the three church members went and told the chief because the chief's son was dying. “Our missionary says that Jesus forgives all our sins and cures all diseases”
Then the chief heard that his son was dying, so he wrapped his son in a blanket and brought it to the yard in front of the missionary's house.
Looking over there, under the bushes, the chief and the village elders are watching.
So, the missionary raises his hands and prays earnestly before the Lord.
It is said that he prayed earnestly with both hands raised, praying for an hour, two hours, three hours, praying for four hours, sweating profusely, with tears and runny noses.
“Living God, spare this son so that they may know that you live and believe that Jesus is the only true Savior who forgives our sins and heals all diseases.”
He also prayed earnestly and proclaimed, “In the name of Jesus of Nazareth, I command you to leave the sick.”
So he cried out and prayed earnestly, but around 1:00 p.m., he heard a “wow” from below, and when he looked, his eyes returned, his face color returned, and the child began to recover.
the child was alive
When the chief saw this, he ran up to him and was overjoyed, saying, 'The Jesus you believe in is the real God' and 'I will also believe in Jesus from now on'.
Even the elders in the village said they would believe in Jesus, so it is said that 1,400 people came to believe in Jesus within a month.
Hallelujah
Everyone, we must cry out to God and seek God in the midst of suffering, crisis, and tribulation, but I also believe that the name we need to call is the name of Jesus.
In Luke 18, a blind man living in Jericho heard that Jesus was passing by and cried out.
“He called out, "Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!"” (Luke 18:38).
He mournfully called on Jesus' name to have mercy on him, so he was eventually healed
Also, as we know well, one of the two thieves who carried the cross like Jesus repented and called on the name of Jesus.
“Then he said, "Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom." Jesus answered him, "I tell you the truth, today you will be with me in paradise."” (Luke 23:42-43).
Even at the last moment of death, when he repents and earnestly calls in the name of Jesus in faith and asks for his own salvation, we can see that he received the promise of salvation from the Lord immediately.
Even if something good happens to us, we should give thanks and praise God in Jesus name.
But even in crises and tribulations, we must call on the name of Jesus.
That is why the Apostle Paul said, “And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” (Colossians 3:17).
God lives, and Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.
I believe that God answers our prayers with all our hearts in Jesus name, great and small miracles.
However, some of us who think, 'I went to church for a long time and said that I believed in Jesus, but this rarely happened to me' is not because the power of the name of Jesus has disappeared, but because 'my faith is weak and my faith is very lacking. That's right'
please think
And I hope that through today's Word, we all could pray, 'May my faith grow and become faithful, so that in the name of Jesus, I may enjoy and live a life of enjoying and proclaiming the amazing power and authority and the grace of salvation.'
Also, praying in Jesus name is by no means casting any magic spell
Never use the name of Jesus as a tool to satisfy my greed
We must use the name of Jesus only for the glory of God while believing in Jesus and having personal fellowship and walking with the Lord.
Therefore, dear ones
Pray in the name of Jesus, the name of the amazing and mysterious salvation, power, authority, and life that you and I have always given for the rest of our life, and exalt that name and testify to the gospel of life in that name to reveal the glory of God. In the name of the Lord, I exhort and bless all of us who live the life of a holy child of God that pleases God.
