주일설교(Sunday Sermon) 사(Isaiah) 52:1
May 22, 2022.
"Put on your garments of splendor"
It is often said that the most basic things that we humans need to live are food, clothing, and shelter.
Clothing, food, and living space
You must have something to wear, you must have something to eat, you must have a place to live
If you don't have one of these, you don't know how uncomfortable and difficult it can be.
But if you look closely at the Bible, you will see that there are also three spiritual needs for the children of God that correspond to these three universal needs of every human being.
In other words, God's people, God's children, need clothes to wear spiritually, food to eat spiritually, and a place to live spiritually.
The spiritual dwelling place is the church
And spiritual food is the Word, the food of our souls.
And you need something to wear spiritually
Today I want to talk to you about this very spiritual clothing garment.
In today's text, God speaks to the people of Israel and to the spiritual Israeli church.
“Awake, awake, O Zion, clothe yourself with strength. Put on your garments of splendor, O Jerusalem, the holy city. The uncircumcised and defiled will not enter you again.” (Isaiah 52:1).
The word we should pay attention to here is the word “Put on your garments of splendor”.
Looking at the whole book of Isaiah and the whole Bible, it is clear that this verse is referring to spiritual clothes, not physical clothes.
And this verse is the background to the spiritual clothes that the New Testament speaks of.
Why is this verse about spiritual clothes? This is because it has been said before, “Awake, Zion, awake.”
This is because, God is telling us to keep awake spiritually toward Zion, that is, Jerusalem, which means the people of Israel and the church that is spiritual Israel.
Since it is connected to the word to be spiritually awake, it is appropriate to view it as a word to wear beautiful spiritual clothes.
As I said before, God's children must eat spiritual food and have a spiritual shelter where they can find strength and rest while living spiritually. And you must also live in spiritual clothes
However, in Revelation 3:17, the Lord's words to the church in Laodicea have these words:
“You say, 'I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.' But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked.” (Revelation 3:17).
Laodicea church was a church where a lot of the rich attended, so there were many members who were proud of themselves that we were rich and we were not lacking in anything.
But the Lord's diagnosis was different
“you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked”
The Laodicea church was a spiritually hungry church. They knew God's Word only through knowledge, but they really believed it and did not eat it, so they were spiritually poor.
That is why they are spiritually poor and even spiritually blind. The Lord said, "How can the blind lead the blind?" There were many spiritually blind people in the church, and they were spiritually naked.
When you are spiritually naked, it means that you have not yet been saved.
Even though they went to church, there were still people who were not saved.
The church in Laodicea was the church that may have been wealthy materially, but was in a state of disastrous spirituality.
There are spiritually naked people in the church, not to mention the world. What should they do? They must put on spiritual clothes
What kind of spiritual clothes?
There are two main types of spiritual clothes. One is to wear Jesus Christ. The second is to put on the full armor of God.
1. The spiritual clothes for sinners - should wear Jesus Christ
The Bible says that every spiritually naked sinner in this world has a garment to wear. It is to be clothed with Jesus Christ.
“Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the sinful nature.” (Romans 13:14).
So what does it mean to put on Jesus Christ?
A good illustration of what it means to be clothed with Jesus Christ is found in Genesis 3
When Adam and Eve sinned and found themselves naked and hid themselves in shame and remorse, God killed the animal and made clothes from its skin.
“The LORD God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them.” (Genesis 3:21).
The skin garments that God gave to Adam and Eve by slaughtering animals, making them bleed, and peeling their skins. So, the skin garments that covered Adam and Eve's nakedness were a prototype of Jesus Christ.
To receive Jesus Christ, who died for our sins as our Savior, is to put on the clothes that cover our sins, and this is to believe in Jesus and to put on Jesus Christ.
Also, being clothed with Jesus Christ is not just a covering of sins.
The clothes we wear aren't just to cover our shame
When a soldier wears a military uniform, a police officer wears a police uniform, a doctor wears a gown, and a judge wears a court uniform, it is also a reminder of what he is doing.
Therefore, to say that I put on Jesus is not the life I live for myself anymore, but it also reveals that I have died and Christ lives in me, and from now on I am a person who lives only for Jesus.
There was an orphaned twin brother in a city
The older brother grew up faithfully, but the younger brother was lost in the path of sin.
One night, younger brother came with a knife and was covered in blood and said to his brother that he killed someone
Knowing that the police would come next, the older brother hurriedly ordered the younger brother to take off his clothes, put on his bloody clothes and put his own clothes on his younger brother, and when he grabbed the knife, the police arrived. The older brother was tried as a murderer eventually sentenced to death
After that, the younger brother wore his older brother's clothes and could no longer live like he used to be.
The sinful self died like the dead clothes worn by the older brother.
He could never live the sinful life of the past, even considering the sacrifice of his brother's love.
From then on, he lived his brother's life on behalf of his older brother. He lived a good and true life.
This story tells how we, who have been saved by the blood of Jesus, should live.
Jesus clothed us in our sins and died for our sins
And we clothed ourselves with Jesus
Therefore, if we know the love and sacrifice of the Lord, we can no longer live the sinful life of the past wearing the clothes of our past sins that Jesus wore.
Just like younger brother did, now we believe that we should wear the clothes of Jesus’ righteousness, put on the clothes of love, and live the life Jesus lived like Jesus. This is the meaning of dressing as Jesus.
2 Spiritual clothes for saved saints to wear: the full armor of God
There is a garment that believers who are clothed with Jesus Christ must wear, that is the full armor of God.
“Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes.” (Ephesians 6:11).
When we believe in Jesus, we automatically become children of God and what kind of status do we have?
We become soldiers of Christ
“Endure hardship with us like a good soldier of Christ Jesus.” (2 Timothy 2:3).
Everyone, whether you like it or not, we are the Lord's soldiers. The Lord's soldiers must wear the spiritual armor God gives them and fight the enemy devil by wearing spiritual uniforms.
“For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” (Ephesians 6:12).
Since the devil is an invisible spiritual force, we cannot fight with the weapons and military uniforms of the world.
And this spiritual warfare for Christians will continue until we go to the kingdom of God.
I think David is the man in the Old Testament who best shows us about fighting in the full armor of God.
As you well know, David went to the battlefield one day to ask for the well-being of his brothers and saw the Israeli army being insulted by the Philistine general Goliath.
However, none of the Israeli army thought to oppose Goliath. At this time, David said that he would go out in faith.
So King Saul gave him his military uniform, but when he put it on, David put it on, and found it too big. He took it off, took a stick and five stones in his hand, and went before the Philistines. And he cried out to Goliath
“David said to the Philistine, "You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the LORD Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.” (1 Samuel 17:45).
Then he threw a slingshot and defeated Goliath
David didn't win the fight with the best military uniform, Saul's uniform, and the best weapon, King Saul's weapon.
He overcame it only by trusting, relying on, and fearing God.
He put on the full armor of God and defeated Goliath. Like David, we pray that we will wear the full armor of God every day and win the spiritual warfare.
“Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place,
and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace.
n addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.
Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests... ” (Ephesians 6:14-18)
Standing, wearing the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, the prepared shoes of the gospel of peace, the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
And lastly, to always strive to be awake and pray in the Holy Spirit is to put on the full armor of God.
3 A bright and clean linen garment to be worn at the last wedding feast with the Lord.
And one last thing to think about
Let's read Revelation 19:7-8 together
“...For the wedding of the Lamb has come, and his bride has made herself ready. Fine linen, bright and clean, was given her to wear. Fine linen stands for the righteous acts of the saints.” (Rev 19:7-8).
These are truly profound and profound spiritual words.
The time will come when Jesus will return one day, and it will be like the wedding feast of the church where Jesus and the bride are held.
But it is said that the clothes that the church, the bride of the Lord, will wear on that day are bright and clean linen clothes, and these clothes are given by God, and they are tthe righteous acts of the saints.
Beloved, all of us who believe in Jesus will participate as brides in our wedding with the Lord on the day of His Second Coming.
Then we will receive from God the glorious garments of bright and clean linen, the garments worn mainly by angels.
Then what kind of voice should we hear?
In the parable of the Lord’s talents, we should heard that the voice heard by the servants who had received the five talents and the two talents, “His master replied, 'Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master's happiness!'” (Matthew 25:21).
We must never hear the rebuke of the Lord, “You wicked, lazy servant!” (Matthew 25:26), which the servant who received the one talent had heard.
And while God continues to give us beautiful linen clothes, won’t he say to us, “Put on your beautiful clothes”?
How thrilling we will be at that time. Please imagine with your spiritual imagination.
Therefore, while we hope for that day, I hope that we will put on faith in Jesus, who is so beautiful and precious in the sight of God, and wear the full armor of God with thanksgiving.
May we live a victorious life fighting the forces of the evil devil who are trying to destroy us, destroy our homes, and destroy our churches.
And I pray in the name of the Lord that we may all become spiritually awake in faith, persevere, make up our mind to live according to the word of God, and live holy lives as the pure bride of the Lord.
