(John) 20:19-22 April 17, 2022
“Cross and Resurrection and Peace and the Holy Spirit”
There is a place called the Alcore Life Extension Foundation in the middle of the desert in Arizona, USA.
However, it is said that about 600 bodies frozen at minus 196 degrees Celsius are stored in special steel barrels waiting to be revived.
The corpses in this room are those who died after suffering from diseases that cannot be cured by modern medicine.
Even now, there are many people who have applied to join Alcore, and the cost is said to cost 1-2 billion won in Korean money.
One of the most basic human desires or wishes is to live long and healthy without getting sick.
Even after being sick and dying, it is the human heart to want to live again.
It is a famous story that Qin Shi Huang, who was the first to unify China in the old days, ordered his men to come to him to find the legendary medicinal herb that prevents aging, saying that he was the son of heaven and wanted to live for a long time without aging.
However, in the end, he couldn't find the herb, and Qin Shihuang heard that mercury is good for the body, so he made mercury pills and took it.
At the age of 50, he contracted a mental illness from mercury poisoning and died a tragic death.
Can you live forever by joining Alcore? no
How can a person not grow old and die by taking such a healthy and expensive drug? no
The Lord of life is the God who created us
Only God the Creator is in control of our life and death
Also, if we believe in our Savior Jesus, whom God has sent, any sinner will be saved and have eternal life. There is no need to enter Alcore.
So Jesus said,
“I tell you the truth, he who believes has everlasting life. I am the bread of life.” (John 6:47-8), “I give them eternal life, and they will never perish” (John 10:28), and “Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?” (John 11:25-26)
It is said that one day, Comte, a French philosopher and founder of sociology, met and had a conversation with the English poet Carlyle.
After talking about this and that, Comte triumphantly told Carlyle, "I am now contemplating creating a perfect religion to replace Christianity, and that new religion will be the perfect and wonderful supreme religion."
Carlyle heard this and said, "It's good that you're creating a new religion, but before that, you must do something. Like Jesus, you too must die and rise again the third day. Only then can the religion you want to create become a living religion."
Christianity is a religion with resurrection Christianity is the only true religion created by God the Creator and is the true truth, unlike man-made religions.
There are many religions in this world, but none of them teach the truth of the resurrection like the resurrection of Jesus.
Only Christianity Teach Resurrection
As I said last week, people who are born polluted with sin and live in sin cannot save themselves by their own actions.
Human needs a savior So God sent Jesus
And Jesus suffered and died on the cross to save us from our sins and give us eternal life in heaven.
He was buried in a tomb and was resurrected three days later.
Jesus, who was resurrected in this way, revealed himself to his disciples in many places, including Mary Magdalene.
And 1 Corinthians 15:6 says, “After that, he appeared to more than five hundred of the brothers at the same time, most of whom are still living, though some have fallen asleep.” (1 Corinthians 15:6).
The text we read today introduces the event that Jesus appeared to the disciples on the evening that he was resurrected.
This is verse 19.
“On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you!"” (John 20:19).
“Peace be with you” were the first words of the resurrected Jesus to his disciples.
But the Lord said the same thing in verse 21, and 8 days later, when Thomas and his disciples were all together, the Lord came again and said the same thing again in verse 26.
You said the same thing three times, so you emphasized it very much. At this point, it is to the extent that this is not a proclamation or a blessing, but a command.
That is, those who believe in Jesus must have peace so that it is real. Where? In Jesus, what kind of Jesus? In Jesus who conquered the powers of sin and death, rose from the dead, lives forever, and is still with us.
Man's greatest fear and greatest enemy is perhaps death
The Bible says that death is the wages of sin, that is, the result of sin. Therefore, there is virtually no true peace for humans who cannot solve the problem of sin, fear death, and await eternal judgment and hell punishment.
That is why the Bible says, “"There is no peace," says my God, "for the wicked."” (Isaiah 57:21).
However, Jesus paid the penalty for our sins on the cross, paid the full price for our sins, and rose again, opening the way for forgiveness of sins, salvation, and eternal life in heaven.
This is where we humans will find true peace.
“Peace be with you” means, “I, who have overcome the powers of sin and death, and am alive forever, forgive your sins and give you eternal life, who believe in me. And I will be with you forever. No matter the situation, any circumstance, whatever difficulties, I will be with you.”
I think it's the Lord's voice
As we well know, the founder of Methodism, John Wesley, was on a mission to America across the Atlantic Ocean in 1735, when a severe storm met a crisis that nearly caused the ship to run aground. He was trembling with fear of death.
However, at this time, Wesley was shocked to see 26 Moravians chanting peacefully on one side of the boat without showing any fear on their faces.
How well they usually practiced godliness to walk with the Lord in their community, life or death did not matter to them. It is said that he felt great shame when he saw it full.
And John Wesley is said to have returned to England after a failure in missionary work in the United States, visited Moravian Christians, and saw and learned how they trust and walk with the Lord.
And a little later, at the Aldersgate Street meeting, I enjoyed the assurance and thrill of salvation, the warmth of my heart, and great peace.
From that time on, John Wesley's ministry changed greatly and he was able to boldly preach the gospel from then on
Ladies and gentlemen, what I felt while living my life of faith and pastoring is that one of the most important things for us Christians is this peace.
As I said a few weeks ago, humility is of course absolutely essential in our life of faith.
And this peace is so important too.
Peace from the Lord, as Jesus said in John 14:27, “My peace I give to you, not as the world gives do I give to you.”
The Lord gives us the peace of the Lord who fully believes in Him.
This peace is absolute peace, heavenly peace.
There is no fear of death, of the world, of people, of anything, but of believing in the Lord, following the Lord, and walking with the Lord.
We need this peace
Ladies and gentlemen, those who have the peace that the resurrected Lord gives, not the peace of the world, are not so easily shaken by the affairs of this world.
Now the disciples were closing the door because they were afraid of people of jews, but how did they change after meeting the risen Lord, having the peace that the Lord gave, and being filled with the Holy Spirit as the Lord commanded?
They have been transformed into bold people who risk their lives to preach the gospel of life, and people who enjoy the peace of the Lord.
Ladies and gentlemen, this is the great blessing that those who believe in the Lord enjoy.
As a sinner, we can never be saved by works. We cannot save ourselves with money, knowledge, or religion. We are saved only through faith in what Jesus accomplished on the cross.
And you will enjoy the peace that the risen Lord gives you, and you will also enjoy joy in the midst of it.
The great joy will surely follow
It's verse 20
“After he said this, he showed them his hands and side. The disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord.” (John 20:20).
There is a saying that everyone who has truly met Jesus, who died on the cross for our sins and rose from the dead, confesses the same thing. It means that there is peace, joy, and gratitude in the heart that I could never enjoy before.
“No, how did the Holy Son of God suffer, die, and rise again for a sinner like me?”
It is to admire, to be moved, to be grateful, and to rejoice.
So Christianity is a religion of joy and a religion of thanksgiving.
As God said, “Rejoice always” (1 Thessalonians 5:16), it is God’s will to always rejoice.
Of course, we must have a heart of mourning for those who wander in sin and those who are dying in a sinful world.
Sometimes, we have to mourn and weep when we see ourselves and the members of the church falling over the temptation of sin.
But the whole nature of Christianity. The whole color of Christianity is joy and the bright color of gratitude.
Why? Because the Lord overcame the powers of sin and death and rose from the dead. And also He has given us eternal life and the true peace of the Lord.
And there is another word from verses 21-22.
"Again Jesus said, "Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you."
And with that he breathed on them and said, "Receive the Holy Spirit." " (John 20:21-22).
After verse 19, the Lord once again said in verse 21, “Peace be with you,” and then said to the disciples,
“As the Father has sent me, so I am sending you” and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit.”
The resurrected Lord didn't said to his disciples, “Just as God the Father sent me into the world, so I am sending you into this world. Come out now. Do not be afraid. Go out and preach the gospel. Preach the gospel of my salvation and resurrection to save souls, Make disciples.”
He told them not to just go, but receive the Holy Spirit and go, be filled with the Holy Spirit, and receive the power of the Holy Spirit and go.
So, after the Ascension of the Lord, the disciples gathered in Mark's upper room and prayed earnestly for the Holy Spirit to come on them.
And 10 days later, on the day of Pentecost, they were filled with the Holy Spirit, like a wind of fiery wind, and from then on they began to preach the gospel boldly.
I have heard some say that this Pentecostal descent of the Holy Spirit is a baton touch mission shift between Jesus and the Holy Spirit.
Yes, the Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Christ, who continues the work that Jesus did on earth.
Therefore, it is always correct to know and understand the cross, resurrection, and Holy Spirit of Jesus as one set, not separately.
In other words, on whom does the Holy Spirit come? It is to come to those who repent in front of the cross of Jesus, truly give thanks for the grace of the cross, and believe in the risen Lord as their Savior.
Also, who does the Holy Spirit use?
He uses a person who thoroughly repents in front of the cross of the Lord and wants to live for the glory of the Lord thoroughly, confessing that the Lord of my life is no longer me, but the Lord who died and rose for me is the Lord of my life.
Although we were saved and became children of God, the Holy Spirit, who was sent for us who still live in this world and live in the weaknesses and limitations of the flesh, is our helper and the one who gives us power.
“In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express.” (Romans 8:26).
“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."” (Acts 1:8).
Therefore, it is very important to enjoy the true peace that the Lord gives us in our religious life, and to live with the help of the Holy Spirit and bear the fruits of the Holy Spirit in the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
Therefore, the risen Lord, who knows this all too well, proclaimed peace to his disciples and commanded them to receive the Holy Spirit.
We will talk more about the Holy Spirit on Pentecost Sunday, but in any case we should pay close attention to these two words of the Lord about peace and the Holy Spirit.
So, how can we receive this kind of peace and the filling of the Holy Spirit?
Of course it's just belief.
Just truly believe in Jesus who died and rose for me.
And earnestly long and ask and pray to God the Father for the pouring out of the peace of the Lord and the pouring out of the Holy Spirit.
And earnestly desire and pray for a life that is used to lead even one more soul to the Lord, a life that is lived for the glory of God.
I believe that God will be moved by this prayer
Then God will surely give
“If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!” (Luke 11:13).
because the Lord said
Everyone, I believe that if we live a holy life in the power of the Holy Spirit with the peace that the Lord has given us, when the day comes when the Lord comes again in glory, we will put off this fragile body and be transformed into a spiritual and glorious body like the resurrected body of the resurrected Jesus.
And I believe that in the eternal kingdom of God and Father's house, we will live in joy forever, enjoying the eternal glory, love, beauty, wisdom, and power of the Holy Trinity in a shining image like the sun.
On this Easter, I hope that all of us will look forward to that day in hope and become all the saints who decide to live the rest of our lives in the peace and the power of the Holy Spirit that the Lord gives us for the glory of God.
