“The miracle of God’s healing experienced by Naaman”
Today I am going to tell you about the miracle of God's healing experienced by General Naaman in 2 Kings 5 of the Old Testament.
In 2 Kings 5, which we read together today, there are two men of faith that we should pay attention to.
The first is a young girl from Israel who was taken captive to the house of General Naaman, and the second is the prophet Elisha.
We can see that when Naaman heard the confession and declaration of faith from these two men and humbly obeyed them, he experienced a miracle that changed the life of General Naaman completely.
someone said
“People look for ways, but God seeks people”
Yes, that's right. Then, what kind of person is God looking for? Yes, of course, He is looking for people of faith and obedience.
God is pleased with these people. He is saving these people, working through them, and expanding the kingdom of God through these people. This is what the whole Bible is saying.
General Naaman of Syria was a man of high rank and authority, but he had a big problem. Verse 1 says
“Now Naaman was commander of the army of the king of Aram. He was a great man in the sight of his master and highly regarded, because through him the LORD had given victory to Aram. He was a valiant soldier, but he had leprosy.” (2 Kings 5:1).
He was such an outstanding and valiant general who had excellent martial arts skills, excellent military strategy, and experienced warfare and many victories in wars.
So he was a great and honorable man before the king, and he was respected by many people. But he got leprosy
Guys, this is life. Everyone has problems.
People look gorgeous and successful on the outside, but inside they all have pain and problems.
And all people are born into the world with an incurable disease
it's a sin
In any case, he must have tried to cure the leprosy in every way.
But the leprosy was not cured. So he must have been in despair
But at this time, there was one good news of hope.
The news came from the mouth of a young girl who had been taken captive from Israel and was working as a servant in his house.
These are verses 2 and 3.
“Now bands from Aram had gone out and had taken captive a young girl from Israel, and she served Naaman's wife.
She said to her mistress, "If only my master would see the prophet who is in Samaria! He would cure him of his leprosy."” (2 Kings 5:2-3)
A young girl who had been taken prisoner and was taking care of Naaman's wife said to her mistress, "I have a prophet of God in my homeland Israel, and if I go to him, he will be able to heal my master's leprosy with the power of God." that was said
Who is Naaman really to this girl?
The enemy is his master Naaman, the commander of the army of the Arameans, who took away her beloved family and friends and his country from herself.
He's got a fatal disease.
Even if she can't show it on the outside, can't she say 'It's okay, die quickly' on the inside?
But the girl took pity on her master Naaman and told her that there was a way for her to be healed.
This is the heart of the true man of God.
Although he is a sinner and wicked man who does not know God, he does not rejoice over his destruction.
It is because he also does not know this. It is the true heart of a man of God and the heart of God to know God, repent, and hope that he will be saved.
So, in Ezekiel 33 and 2 Peter 3 in the Bible, it is said as follows.
“Say to them, 'As surely as I live, declares the Sovereign LORD, I take no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but rather that they turn from their ways and live. Turn! ” (Ezekiel 33:11)
“The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.” (2 Peter 3:9).
The girl expected her master Naaman to go to an Israeli prophet and receive treatment for his disease, believing in God the Creator and repenting and living a new life.
So that's what she told the hostess
This was a small obedience and an act of faith
But in fact, it was an act that required great faith.
Because if Naaman went to Israel and the disease was not healed, this girl could lose her life.
Therefore, in the appearance of this girl, we can see the desperate love of the girl who unwittingly risked her life and wants her master to live.
Today, we often see many Christians living their lives with their mouths shut, even in situations where it is acceptable to preach the gospel.
But look at the compassion and courage of this girl who speaks God and the gospel even though she doesn't have to say anything.
And see the wide love and forgiveness of a girl who, even though he is her enemy, wants to meet God, be healed, and become a new person.
And if the master's illness does not heal, even though she may die, God is the living Almighty God, and the prophet Elisha sees the confidence of this girl's fervent faith, who believed that God's power could heal leprosy. I think we should really learn this.
As soon as Naaman's wife heard the girl's words, she told her husband.
And I don't know if General Naaman called the girl and asked for more details, but how desperate the situation was, he went straight to the king of Aram and told the truth.
Then the king also wrote a letter to the king of Israel, no matter how much he loved Naaman. And Naaman immediately went to Israel with a lot of money, horses and chariots.
Then he met King Jehoram of Israel and delivered him a letter from the king of Syria.
But when King Jehoram read the letter, he tore his clothes and said that he was embarrassed and angry.
It's verse 7
“As soon as the king of Israel read the letter, he tore his robes and said, "Am I God? Can I kill and bring back to life? Why does this fellow send someone to me to be cured of his leprosy? See how he is trying to pick a quarrel with me!"” (2 Kings 5:7).
What started with a single word from a young girl became a crisis situation that could spread to political problems and conflicts between the two countries due to King Jehoram's misunderstanding.
And this news reached the ears of many people and Elisha, and Elisha sent a man to the king, saying, “Have the man come to me and he will know that there is a prophet in Israel.” (2 Kings 5:8).
So Naaman, with his men, horses, and chariots, went to the address of the house that Elisha had sent, and stood at the door of Elisha's house.
“So Naaman went with his horses and chariots and stopped at the door of Elisha's house.” (2 Kings 5:9).
But for some reason, Elisha did not reveal himself to Naaman's crowd. Instead, he sent his servant and said,
“Elisha sent a messenger to say to him, "Go, wash yourself seven times in the Jordan, and your flesh will be restored and you will be cleansed."” (2 Kings 5:10).
Naaman is still the commander of the Aramaean army, but he must have thought that Elisha would welcome him with courtesy.
But as soon as they met, Elisha did not come out directly, but through the servant, he immediately went to the Jordan River and said to wash himself seven times, so Naaman felt very bad.
It was considered rude and he became angry. Common sense was that his anger was natural.
Verses 11 and 12
"But Naaman went away angry and said, "I thought that he would surely come out to me and stand and call on the name of the LORD his God, wave his hand over the spot and cure me of my leprosy.
Are not Abana and Pharpar, the rivers of Damascus, better than any of the waters of Israel? Couldn't I wash in them and be cleansed?" So he turned and went off in a rage." (2 Kings 5:11-12).
When Naaman came to Israel, he must have wondered who Elisha was. And he must have imagined how he would cure his disease
But he was offended by Elisha's attitude, acting so differently from his own thoughts and expectations.
So he tried to return to the land of Syria, saying, 'I would rather go to the river of Damascus to wash than to go to the Jordan and wash, and be clean.'
Guys, the thing to think about here is that God's thinking is different from ours.
As sinners, there is always something we must do in order to receive God's grace and be healed.
First I have to let go of my thoughts, my pride, my experience, my knowledge, my culture. I have to get rid of all the insignias in my life
Naaman should have known that he was not coming to the man Elisha now, but to the living God of Israel, the Creator God, who created all the heavens and the earth and all things.
He had to know that he did not come out as a commander in the army as a high and powerful person, but only as a sick and sinner before the high and holy God.
And to meet God, he had to know that he had to fall on his face had to kneel down before God and come to God, saying “God, have mercy on me, have mercy on me, heal my sickness, forgive my sins, and save me.”
Everyone, what is God saying in Isaiah 55, which we know well? Verses 7 and 9
“Let the wicked forsake his way and the evil man his thoughts. Let him turn to the LORD, and he will have mercy on him, and to our God, for he will freely pardon.” (Isaiah 55:7).
“As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.” (Isaiah 55:9).
God's way and God's thoughts are higher than ours. Therefore, we are told to turn away from our low and wrong thoughts and ways and turn to God.
Everyone, how wonderful it would be if we, sinners, would just write about the Ten Commandments of the Old Testament 100 times at a time, sign up to live as they are, worship God every Sunday, live a good and good life, preach God, and save us.
But God did not use that method.
God's thoughts were different from our thoughts. He brought the Son of God to come to this earth as a human being so that the innocent Son of God suffered death on the cross.
This redemption on the cross where the Son of God sheds blood to atone for our sins. This was God's thought and God's way. It was God's love.
Does it make sense? Is it common sense or not?
It doesn't make sense at all
Would a leper be healed by going into the Jordan River and washing seven times?
What power does the Jordan River have? No, it doesn't make sense.
In Numbers 21, God sent fiery serpents to the people of Israel who grumbled in the wilderness and bit them to death.
So the people mourned for Moses, and Moses prayed to God.
“The LORD said to Moses, "Make a snake and put it up on a pole; anyone who is bitten can look at it and live."” (Numbers 21:8).
What in the world is this nonsense? People who are bitten by fiery serpents, or vipers, see how they come back to life when they see a snake on a pole. You have to take an antidote.
But everyone who saw the bronze serpent on the pole came to life.
“So Moses made a bronze snake and put it up on a pole. Then when anyone was bitten by a snake and looked at the bronze snake, he lived.” (Numbers 21:9).
Who healed them, the bronze serpent on the pole?
no
God healed and saved those who believed and obeyed with the invisible hand of God.
And here the brass serpent on a pole symbolizes Jesus, who died on the cross and rose again.
It is God's way that cannot be understood by human common sense. It is God's providence.
Fortunately, among the servants of Naaman who came with him, there were wise men who persuaded Naaman, saying, ‘Master, you came all the way here and you just want to go back, so you would have heard him tell you to do something bigger, but why can’t you just go into the river and wash seven times?’
Then Naaman, who was still humble in heart, changed his mind and ate and did as the prophet told him. And he was cleansed.
It's verse 14
“So he went down and dipped himself in the Jordan seven times, as the man of God had told him, and his flesh was restored and became clean like that of a young boy.” (2 Kings 5:14).
Everyone, did this miracle happen because there was power in the Jordan River? I believe it is a miracle that God spoke through Elisha and performed with invisible hands to those who obeyed His word.
In that sense, the Jordan River is a river with many miracles.
When Joshua conquered the land of Canaan, the Jordan River split when the priests carrying the ark were immersed in the river in faith. In 2 Kings 2, when Elijah struck the river with his cloak, the water parted. When he struck the Jordan River, the water splitted. In 2 Kings 6, Elisha threw a branch into the Jordan River and the iron ax that fell into the water floated up.
Everything was done by the invisible hand of God.
Today Naaman's leprosy was healed, and he was made clean.
In a way, the Jordan River in today's text spiritually symbolizes the blood of Jesus on the cross.
This is because the blood of Jesus on the cross cleanses us from all our sins, which is a nonsensical method and not common sense in the human mind.
Therefore, just as Naaman washed seven times in the Jordan River, was healed of leprosy, and came to believe in the living God, so that all sinful mankind humbly come to this river of grace called the blood of Jesus on the cross, repent and receive forgiveness of all sins when they are washed away.
Any filthy sins will be washed away and you will become a new person.
It was because of the words of the two people that Naaman was cured of an incurable disease and came to believe in the living God.
The first was the words of a young girl who had been captured.
She told the prophets of Israel that he could be healed.
The second was Elisha's words. He told them to go into the Jordan River and dip 7 times.
Faith comes from hearing
And when that faith was the faith of humble obedience, they experienced a miracle
Everyone, therefore, let us bear the same conviction as the little girl and testify to the living and almighty God of the Creator, the God of love, justice, miracles, and salvation.
Also, I hope to proclaim this to unbelievers like Elisha
‘Only believe in the blood of Jesus on the cross and all sins are forgiven.
If you wash away your sins in the river of the precious blood of Jesus on the cross, you will be washed clean.”
I hope that you and I will be bold
Miracles of healing and salvation will happen to those who hear, believe, and obey the words of God.
