주일설교(Sunday Sermon) 왕상(1 Kings) 19:4-5
“The Great Disappointment and Recovery of Elijah”
2022. 8. 21.
But he himself went a day's journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a juniper tree; and he requested for himself that he might die, and said, "It is enough; now, O LORD, take my life, for I am not better than my fathers."(1 Kings19:4-5)
If you look at verse 2 of the lyrics of New Hymn 549, you will find these lyrics
“My lord, do as you will.
Do not be discouraged in the midst of great sorrow.
Even the Lord cried sometimes
Take control of me and do what you want.”
As it is shown here, in life, we sometimes get discouraged in the midst of great worries. This is no exception for those who believe in Jesus.
Even our Lord came to this earth in a physical body, so didn't he sometimes weep in sorrow?
And the Lord not only wept but also said that his heart was troubled and he was dying.
“He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee along with him, and he began to be sorrowful and troubled. Then he said to them, "My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me." (Matthew26:37-38)
As we well know, this is the scene where Jesus went to the Garden of Gethsemane on the Mount of Olives to pray with Peter, James, and John before He was crucified.
At this time, the Lord said that my heart was so troubled that I was about to die. It was full of great sorrow and fear and fear of death.
How great miracles and powers did Jesus perform?
And how deep and mysterious did He proclaim and teach the truth of the kingdom of God?
So, of course, there were those who believed in the Lord, but many people not only did not believe in the Lord, but rather tried to kill the Lord. How great must the sorrow of the Lord be?
Seeing those who did not recognize Jesus, the Messiah prophesied in the Old Testament, who came to die for their sins, and those who were completely spiritually blind because of their sins, the Lord was in deep sorrow.
And although he is God, he came in a human body, so the death of the cross was an object of great pain and fear even for the Lord.
So the Lord is saying that my heart is troubled and I am dying.
1 Elijah's Great Disappointment
However, in the text we read today, a man who died because of his troubled heart. He is Elijah
As we looked at last week, Elijah fought 450 Baal prophets and 400 Asherah prophets and defeated them in a spiritual battle on Mount Carmel.
When he prayed toward heaven, God opened the door of heaven and answered with fire, and all 850 Gentile prophets were executed.
it's been such a big win
Then, when Elijah the prophet went up to the top of Mount Carmel and prayed. Finally, a miracle of heavy rain fell in the land of Israel, which had not rained for three years and six months.
In verse 4 of today's text, Elijah, a servant of power who experienced such a wonderful victory and miracle, sat under a rosemary and asked God to kill him, saying, "Take away my life now."
“while he himself went a day's journey into the desert. He came to a broom tree, sat down under it and prayed that he might die. "I have had enough, LORD," he said. "Take my life; I am no better than my ancestors."” (1 Kings 19:4).
How did Elijah's appearance change in just a day or two?
Elijah, who prayed valiantly and boldly in front of the prophets of Baal and the people of Israel, made fire come down from heaven and made it rain, is nowhere to be seen. He is so discouraged that he asks God to kill him. Why did this happen ?
The reason is that Jezebel sent an envoy to Elijah to warn and threaten to kill Elijah. Verse 2
“So Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah to say, "May the gods deal with me, be it ever so severely, if by this time tomorrow I do not make your life like that of one of them."” (1 Kings 19:2).
King Ahab told his wife Jezebel everything that happened on Mount Carmel.
Jezebel, who for some reason did not come to Mount Carmel that day, heard the story that her idol prophets were defeated and killed in the spiritual battle on Mount Carmel.
But instead of fearing and repenting of the living God who sent fire from heaven, she became angry and threatened to kill Elijah.
Elijah says that he fled for his life.
It's verse 3
“And when he saw that, he arose, and went for his life, and came to Beersheba, which belongeth to Judah, and left his servant there.” (1 Kings 19:3).
But we see here one major mistake of Elijah: “And when he saw that”
Of course we can always see a given situation and circumstances
But we have something to look at first
It is God. Even if we are tormented in every direction with many problems, we must not forget that we must raise our eyes to God and ask for His help and guidance.
But we see here one major mistake of Elijah: “He saw this situation.”
Of course we can always see a given situation and circumstances
But we have something to look at first
It is God. Even if we are tormented in every direction with many problems, we must not forget that we must raise our eyes to God and ask for His help and guidance.
Elijah was threatened with death by Jezebel and of course had to ask God
“God, that evil woman is threatening to kill me. God, please teach me what to do.”
Wouldn't that have been God's guidance?
But suddenly the fear of death and the disappointment and discouragement that King Ahab and Jezebel did not repented and return to God caused him to lose his mind and just get busy running away.
So the prophet of northern Israel fled to Beersheba, which is in southern Judah.
And he made his servant stay there, and he went one more day into the wilderness.
And Elijah, who was exhausted and very hungry and thirsty, fell under a broom tree and asked God to kill him.
But God was a God who loved Elijah.
So Elijah did not kill Elijah as Elijah asked, but instead restored Elijah.
2 God restores Elijah
First, God gave Elijah, who was exhausted and thirsty, to sleep.
The first half of verse 5 says, “He lay down and slept under a juniper tree”
When a person is physically too tired and exhausted, one of the most necessary things is to get a good sleep. Sleep is very important
That's why Psalm 127:2 says, "for he grants sleep to those he loves.."
It's not good for your person to work and study and work too much without a break because they work and sleep less.
need a break
Restoration is necessary
That's why the bible doesn't say rest is a sin
laziness is a sin
So didn't God make the Sabbath?
And God then sent an angel to Elijah, to caress Elijah who was sleeping, and to prepare water to drink and bread to eat, so that Elijah could eat and drink and be strong.
This is verse 5
“He lay down and slept under a juniper tree; and behold, there was an angel touching him, and he said to him, "Arise, eat."” (1 Kings 19:5).
I told you that it was a big mistake that Elijah saw the situation earlier and ran away to live without seeing God.
But there is one thing Elijah did well under the broom tree.
It's a little late, but He cried out to God and pleaded with God.
"God, it's hard enough for me to die. God, please kill me. I'm far worse than my forefathers, the brave Moses and David. I'm a coward, I think I'm a useless person."
He was just shouting out his inner heart before God as it was.
Even if we are faced with very difficult and difficult things in our lives, we should not just look at the problems
It can't be solved and you can get into more trouble
Even if life is dark, the future is bleak, and there seems to be no hope, we must cry out to God toward the heaven
Now, I think that Elijah's inner heart was not really wanting to die, he wanted to live, and he was using such irony that he wanted to be used more boldly in front of God.
Yes, it is better to express your feelings honestly and honestly, except for disbelief and grumbling against God. I believe that God's comfort and grace will come upon you.
God sent an angel to caress Elijah's weary body
And the angel gave him bread and water to eat and drink for him, who was hungry and thirsty.
When the prodigal son, who had left the house, realized his mistake, repented and returned to his father's house, saying that he should become a servant, his father did not rebuke him.
The father first killed the calf and made him eat and drink.
He touched his son's weary heart and made him recover his weakened body.
This is God's heart and love
Just as God sent an angel to comfort and restore Elijah, when it comes to the New Testament, God sent His only begotten Son Jesus for all mankind to save us from our sins and restore the lost image of God and the authority to become children of God.
Jesus is the Lord who not only resurrects our dead spirits, but also touches and heals the wounds of our sick bodies and hearts.
In particular, the Lord touches and heals our discouraged hearts, broken hearts and pains. He comforts our weary and weary hearts and gives us true peace.
“"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28), the Lord has promised.
And the angel gave Elijah bread and water for the flesh, but Jesus gave his body, the bread of life, and his blood, the lifeblood, to save us. He tore himself on the cross and shed his blood
So, by eating the flesh and blood of Jesus, and by eating and drinking by faith spiritually, He gave us eternal life.
“Jesus said to them, "I tell you the truth, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you.
Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day.” (John 6:53-54).
I believe that when we are convinced of the love of the Lord shown through the cross and the love of God who sent him, we will find strength and comfort in any difficulties and despair and will rise again.
And God wanted to restore Elijah by correcting one wrong heart in his heart.
One of the reasons Elijah fell into such great discouragement and spiritual depression was because he thought that he was the only one left.
From Mount Carmel he often said, "I alone am left a prophet of the LORD"
“Then Elijah said to the people, "I alone am left a prophet of the LORD” (1 Kings 18:22).
And in today's text 19:10 and 14, we see twice, "And I alone am left; and they seek my life, to take it away."
He thought that he was the only one who fought against idols in northern Israel. But this is a wrong idea. There were 100 prophets that Obadiah had hidden, and in verse 18, there were 7,000 who did not bow their knees to Baal.
Why do so many people fall into discouragement and spiritual stagnation? 'Cause they think I'm alone
A pastor said that when he visits church members, many say
"Pastor, why is it that only me and my family suffers like this? It seems that other people and their families don't, so why is it difficult for me and my family?"
But no, I'm not the only one suffering. It's because we don't speak. Everyone has their own pain, suffering, and discouragement.
We must remember that there are many who are in greater suffering and even greater persecution than I am.
Earlier, Jesus said that he died because he was worried before the cross, but the Lord was not alone in such a place of discouragement. He took three disciples with him.
Here is an important spiritual principle
All of you, if you have the skills and abilities of Jesus, you can do everything on your own.
But the Lord was always with the 12 disciples, that is, he had co-workers in the faith.
And he went to the Garden of Gethsemane with three disciples. In the same way, we need a co-worker of faith. We need a community of faith. We need a community of faith to share life, share the Word, pray, and share comfort and encouragement together.
God said it was not good for Adam to be alone.
Elijah went into the wilderness alone
he blocked himself from people
Of course, we need our closet in the wilderness where we can pray alone before God.
But in general we need a co-worker of faith in our lives
It was said that the time of King Ahab was also a very dark time spiritually, but God had left 7,000 people in Israel who did not bow their knees to Baal.
And God wanted Elijah to work with the 7,000 men.
So, if we look at it later, we can see that Elijah returns to northern Israel again and establishes prophetic schools in Bethel and Jericho and trains disciples and prophets.
Elijah realized the importance of partnership.
He is considered one of Korea's representative intellectuals.
The late Dr. Lee Eoryeong, a scholar and a former professor and writer and minister, seems to have led a successful life. However, in an interview, he called himself a failure in life.
“I had no companions in my life. I thought they were companions, but looking back, they were all competitors. I had family and friends, but I didn’t have much time with them.”
dear ones
So come into the community of faith
Let go of the wrong idea that I am alone and share faith and love with co-workers of faith
Everyone, Elijah suffered great hardship due to unexpected and great discouragement after the great victory, but he was restored in God's love and was used preciously for the glory of God until the end of his life.
Disappointment, depression, and difficulties like this can come to us, too, so we can fall.
But we have a Heavenly Father who loves us so much.
There is Jesus and there is a co-worker of faith
There are God's people
Therefore, like Elijah, we too can rise again and be restored through God's grace. I believe that we can be used again.
