January 22 2023
"Be Holy"
Do you know the will of God?
We must know at least the two wills of God that are taught to us in the Bible. First, it is God's will that sinners believe in Jesus and have eternal life.
“For my Father's will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day.” (John 6:40).
And second, our holiness is the will of God. 1 Thessalonians 4:3
“It is God's will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality;” (1 Thessalonians 4:3).
In summarizing these words, it is God's pleasure for sinners to believe in Jesus, gain eternal life, become God's children, and live a holy life.
Simply put, it is God's will that sinners be saved and holy
Therefore, the two core themes of the entire Bible can be said to be salvation and holiness. Therefore, the family and the church, which are divine institutions established by God, can be said to be a community that achieves salvation and holiness.
We are called to salvation and holiness
Today, I am going to share the word about holiness among salvation and holiness. I bless you to listen to the word about holiness and be able to become all of us who glorify God through a life that pursues holiness and a holy life.
1 God is holy
First of all, in order for us to speak of holiness, we must first speak of God's holiness. Because God's holiness is the standard and basis of holiness.
If we look at verse 16 of today's text, "It is written, 'Be holy, because I am holy'" (1 Peter 1:16).
God said that you must be holy, because God Himself is holy.
This is a quote from Leviticus 19 in the Old Testament.
Leviticus 19:1-2
"The LORD said to Moses,
"Speak to the entire assembly of Israel and say to them: 'Be holy because I, the LORD your God, am holy.(Leviticus 19:1-2).
God introduced himself as holy
God introduced Himself as Almighty God to Abraham in Genesis 17:1, saying, “I am the Almighty God.”
Also, in Exodus 3, God introduced Moses as a self-existing person, saying, “God said to Moses, “I am who I am” (Exodus 3:14).
And in Exodus 15:26, God introduced Himself as “I am the Lord who heals you.”
However, these words are not repeated very often. However, in Leviticus alone, God repeats that He is a holy God five times (Leviticus 11:44, 45, Lev 19:2, Lev 20:26, Lev 21:8).
In Jewish culture, if it is repeated twice, it means emphasis. When God called Abraham from Moriah, he called twice, and when he called Moses from Horeb, he called twice. But if it is repeated five times, it means great emphasis. And that's not all. The emphasis on God's holiness repeated three times in a row in one passage is found in the books of Asaiah and Revelation.
First, Isaiah 6:3
“And they were calling to one another: "Holy, holy, holy is the LORD Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory."” (Isaiah 6:3).
This word is the calling of the prophet Isaiah to meet God and receive his mission. Here, the seraphim proclaims the holiness of God three times in a row.
And the words of Revelation 4
“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty, who was, and is, and is to come.” (Revelation 4:8b).
Here, too, it is shouted out that it is holy while repeating it three times. In Jewish culture, twice means emphasis and three times means superlative.
Everyone, holy is kadosh in Hebrew, and it means to be separated. God is the Creator and is a holy being who is completely separated from this world where sin is rampant and sinners.
2 The holy God has called us and now commands us to be holy.
see verse 15
“But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do;” (1 Peter 1:15).
First, it says, “he who called you is holy.”
So holy God called us first
We may think that we choose God because we are smart enough to believe in God, but we are not. God always called first
God called us through evangelists, friends who believed first, parents, and family members.
I was also called by God through the sisters who believed first.
But God calls us in two ways. First, He calls us to salvation. He calls sinners to repent, believe in God, and believe in Jesus.
And those who obey the call of salvation are called to a holy life and a holy ministry.
This is to live a life of being the light and salt of the world, as Jesus said.
In Matthew 5:13, the Lord said, “You are the salt of the earth,” and in verse 14, “You are the light of the earth.”
Guys, the Lord said we are the salt of the earth and the light of the world. Holiness is what is revealed in the world.
God wants us to live as salt and light in this sinful and spiritually dark world.
Guys, who do you think of who lived a holy life in the Bible?
I think of Joseph. Joseph was unintentionally sold as a slave to Egypt, where the sinful culture of the world and idolatry were prevalent.
But he did not forget the holy God
He firmly believed that God was with him and lived a life of walking with God.
As Joseph walked with God, he was able to arm himself with the holy power that God gave him.
That's why he overcame the temptation of his mistress who seduced him and protected him from sin.
So, although he endured the hardships of being imprisoned, he was finally blessed by God and used by God.
Everyone, Joseph was a man who had already lived according to the words of Leviticus, “be holy, for I am holy.”
Daniel is the one who comes to mind when it comes to holy people in the Bible.
Daniel was a man who thoroughly obeyed the word “be holy”
Although he was taken captive to Babylon, Daniel 1:8 says, "But Daniel resolved not to defile himself with the royal food and wine, and he asked the chief official for permission not to defile himself this way."
Everyone, it is known that Daniel was in his late teens at this time. Although he was still a young teenager, he decided to live a holy life in front of God and lived his whole life.
Even in his old age, he was a man who steadily lived a holy life and lived a God-fearing life. They are truly God's people who challenge us.
The environment in which Joseph and Daniel lived was an environment in which idolatry and worldly adultery were prevalent.
It was an environment with many temptations where it was never easy to serve God and live a holy life.
However, Joseph and Daniel overcame such temptation and feared God and lived a holy life.
This era we live in is a difficult world with many problems.
In the 1980s, American Pastor Billy Graham, looking at the corrupt America, said, “If God does not judge the spiritually and morally corrupt American land, he must apologize to the people of Sodom and Gomorrah.”
Guys, you have no idea how much the world has fallen spiritually and morally today.
But God tells us to be holy
Everyone, holiness is the power. I believe that when you are holy, you will live a holy life that reveals God's existence and glory like Joseph and Daniel.
3 Spiritual principles to know in order to live a holy life: the principle of contact
Then, how can we live a holy life pleasing to God?
Today I would like to share with you an important spiritual principle.
It is the principle of contact
I will introduce the words related to this. First, the words of Exodus.
“For seven days make atonement for the altar and consecrate it. Then the altar will be most holy, and whatever touches it will be holy.” (Exodus 29:37).
And the words of Leviticus
“"Say to Aaron and his sons: 'These are the regulations for the sin offering: The sin offering is to be slaughtered before the LORD in the place the burnt offering is slaughtered; it is most holy.” (Leviticus 6:25).
“Whatever touches any of the flesh will become holy” (Leviticus 6:27)
To put it simply, these words become holy when they come in contact with things such as altars and sacrifices that are set apart as holy before God.
Everyone, there is a proverb in our country called Geun-muk-ja-heuk.
It means that if you get close to the ink that contains the ink, it will become black without knowing it.
This means that if you get close to a bad person, you will unknowingly be stained with evil.
Everyone, originally, humans were created holy in the image of God and lived happily in fellowship with the holy God in the Garden of Eden.
However, as Adam and Eve came into contact with the serpent, the enslaver of Satan, the force of sin, they had to cut off that contact.
They couldn't do that, but kept in contact and succumbed to the temptation.
And disobeyed God's word
And humans were kicked out of the Garden of Eden and had to live in curses and hardships.
But God took pity on our lives and sent a savior. This is Jesus.
God, the Son of God, came to this earth wearing a human body and shed His blood on the cross for our sins.
What are the spiritual principles of God?
Now, those who approach and contact this Jesus with faith receive the forgiveness of sins and restore lost spiritual life and holiness.
Everyone, contact means to go and touch, but it also means to get closer spiritually. Everyone, get close to the holy God. When we get close to the Holy Trinity God, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, we can become more holy and live a holy life.
Leviticus 10:3.
“Moses then said to Aaron, "This is what the LORD spoke of when he said: " 'Among those who approach me I will show myself holy;” (Leviticus 10:3).
James 4:8 also says, “Come near to God and he will come near to you.”
And keep close to the Holy Word, the Bible, keep reading, listening and meditating.
Strive for prayer, the holy communion with God
Isn't that why 1 Timothy 4:5 says "sanctified by the word of God and prayer"?
Sing many holy songs and fellowship with the holy saints
And come into contact with the Holy Blood of the Lord.
The blood of the Lord has the power to make us holy
“And so Jesus also suffered outside the city gate to make the people holy through his own blood.” (Hebrews 13:12).
That's why my favorite hymn is number 268.
Verse 1 Freedom from sin is the power of your precious blood. Your blood overcomes the test and is victorious. It is truly amazing. Your blood is powerful. Believe in your blood.
You don't know how much it is a hymn that gives strength and grace every time it is sung.
I believe that the cross of Jesus is not only the power to lead us to salvation, but also the power to overcome such temptations and tests when the world and Satan tempt us with sin.
Then open your heart's eyes and stand at the foot of the cross of Jesus, and see Jesus shedding His blood for all of your sins with your spiritual eyes.
Then we will overcome the temptations and temptations of sin.
Lastly, always rely on the Holy Spirit and live according to the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is literally the Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit is not any energy or force, but a person and God.
In Romans 15:16, it says, "the Gentiles might become an offering acceptable to God, sanctified by the Holy Spirit"
When we are in the grace of the Holy Spirit, we are becoming holy.
And it is called being filled with the Holy Spirit to fully receive the guidance and control of the Holy Spirit, and then we become holy in the Holy Spirit, bear the fruit of the Holy Spirit, and live by overcoming our physical nature and desires.
Beloved, God is a holy God
He is absolutely holy and completely holy.
That God says to us, “Be holy because I am holy.”
Sinners must first believe in Jesus and be saved, but anyone who believes in Jesus, who has experienced God's grace, must now live in obedience to God's command to be holy.
That's because you can live a life that is the light and salt of the world.
Everyone, I heard a pastor say, "Holiness is more precious than life. As long as you keep holiness, you can at least stand before God. Because keeping holiness is keeping faith."
Yes, the saints must know the value of holiness
The believer's purpose is not success, but holiness
Therefore, do not long for and pursue success in the world, long for and pursue holiness until the day you stand before the Lord.
I believe that when you do that, you will be praised by the Lord.
