주일설교(SERMON) 눅(Luke) 22:41-44
“Let’s pray the prayer Jesus showed us”
“He withdrew about a stone's throw beyond them, knelt down and prayed,
"Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done."
An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him.
And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground”(Luke 22:41-44)
Everyone, Jesus is truly an eternal mystery, eternal life and love.
and is the object of endless exploration
No one ever fully knows Jesus. Because he is God
So, Jesus cannot be seen from only one side, so the Gospels that introduce Jesus to the extent that there is no origin in the Bible are made up of four Gospels.
And Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John each introduces Jesus as they saw, heard, and experienced each other through their own perspectives and experiences.
But today I am going to talk about prayer. From the point of view of prayer, there is a rather special Gospel, and that is the Gospel of Luke.
Because the Gospel of Luke contains much more words about prayer and about Jesus praying than the other three Gospels.
As you know, the person who wrote the Gospel of Luke and the Acts of the Apostles is the doctor Luke.
However, in the eyes of the doctor Luke, the Early Church was a truly special community.
Leaders are mainly composed of fishermen, carpenters, and customs officers. When they prayed together, the ground trembled, and the gathered people received the fire of the Holy Spirit and became a community that preached the powerful gospel.
Also, it was a community that could not be found anywhere else in the world where miracles happen because God was with them.
However, according to Luke's pursuit and research, the disciples of the Early Church were not originally people who prayed fervently.
Originally, Jesus was always a person who prayed fervently, but the disciples did not.
But finally, after Jesus died and resurrected, they were commanded to wait for the promised Holy Spirit, the disciples gathered in Mark's upper room to pray, and after receiving the full grace of the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost, they became people of fervent prayer and witnesses of the gospel. that he came to know
So, the Gospel of Luke was finally recorded with deep interest in the prayer of Jesus, which is the root of the fervent prayer of the early church.
And it is revealed in the Acts of the Apostles that the community of fervent prayer in the Early Church is a community that resembles the prayer of Jesus
In this respect, I am very grateful to Luke. Thank him for recording Luke's Gospel so that I can properly know about Jesus, who really lived a life of prayer, and also for recording precious words that only appear in Luke's Gospel. And also how thankful I am for the record of Acts, the only historical book in the New Testament, so that we can learn about the early church's prayers, the preaching of the gospel, the work of the Holy Spirit, and revival.
And although Luke was able to live a comfortable life and wealth as a doctor, he put all of that behind and went on missionary trips with the elderly and sick apostle Paul as a doctor, prayed together, preached the gospel together, and healed diseases. He lived such a beautiful life of dedication
Even today, sometimes when I see doctors of faith who give up a guaranteed life and go to the poor and marginalized and carry out the mission of medical missionaries, I feel the same emotion as seeing another doctor, Luke.
Dear friends, I hope that even if you and I are not medical missionaries, we can become precious servants who are devoted and cooperate like Dr. Luke to spread the gospel of the Lord and expand the kingdom of God.
Anyway, according to Luke, Jesus always prayed. He had spiritual fellowship with God through prayer every day.
In particular, Luke records the appearance of the Lord who prayed earnestly to fulfill the mission given by God and to make important decisions.
If it had not been for the Gospel of Luke, we would not have been able to know the image of Jesus praying all the time through the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and John.
Jesus prayed when he was baptized by John the Baptist
And when the Lord chose the 12 disciples, he went to the mountain and prayed all night before choosing the disciples.
“One of those days Jesus went out to a mountainside to pray, and spent the night praying to God.
When morning came, he called his disciples to him and chose twelve of them, whom he also designated apostles” (Luke 6:12-13).
And the Lord went to pray on the famous Mount of Transfiguration, and when he prayed, he was transformed in an amazing way.
The Lord also prayed for Peter, whose heart was shaken by being tempted by Satan.
And today's text is the scene where Jesus went to the Mount of Olives and prayed with the cross in front of him, the greatest mission he had to fulfill.
I thought of this while thinking about the image of Jesus praying recorded by Luke.
How many times did Jesus pray every day during the three years of his public ministry?
Among them, Luke would have chosen and recorded them, but the scenes of Jesus praying recorded in Luke's Gospel challenged and moved Luke, so I wondered if they were the prayers of Jesus that Luke wanted to imitate
Anyway, everyone, like this, Jesus prayed and prayed every day to fulfill the mission God entrusted to him.
Therefore, we must follow the prayer of Jesus and pray to fulfill the precious mission entrusted to us by God, and we must strive to pray every day.
Now, let's look at the prayer of Jesus that we should imitate, focusing on today's text.
Let's break it down into two parts
The first is the attitude of Jesus' prayer, and the second is the content of Jesus' prayer.
First, let's look at Jesus' attitude of prayer. This is verse 41 of the text.
“He withdrew about a stone's throw beyond them, knelt down and prayed,” (Luke 22:41).
It says that when Jesus prayed, he knelt down and prayed.
When everyone kneels, it means the lowest posture and humble posture.
And kneeling also represents the most earnest and respectful heart.
In this respect, in many cases, people of faith in the Old Testament knelt before God when they prayed.
The famous Daniel was like that.
“Now when Daniel learned that the decree had been published, he went home to his upstairs room where the windows opened toward Jerusalem. Three times a day he got down on his knees and prayed, giving thanks to his God, just as he had done before.” (Daniel 6:10).
Daniel did not pray for 30 days, but prayed secretly in his heart, but he did not do that. He got down on his knees three times a day and prayed and gave thanks to God as he always did before.
He prayed that if he died, he would die.
And in the Old Testament, Solomon told Elijah that Ezra knelt and prayed, and as we shared last week, James, the brother of Jesus, met the resurrected Lord and lived as a man of prayer throughout his life, so he was nicknamed the camel's knee.
Also, the attitude of the Lord's prayer that we must learn is in verse 44.
“And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground.” (Luke 22:44).
You have no idea how earnestly Jesus prayed to God with a heavy heart before the cross.
When Jesus came to this world and fulfilled his mission, he did nothing haphazardly.
He devoted his heart and soul to teaching, preaching the gospel, and healing ministry. He also devoted himself to prayer.
With today's biggest mission and heavy mission ahead, Jesus says that when he prayed, he prayed with all his might to the point that his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground.
It is said that Palestine is very hot during the day, but at night it is cold even with a coat on. But now, he prayed in the evening, and he prayed to the point of sweating. I think of how much the Lord struggled and prayed.
Have you ever prayed so much that you sweat when you pray?
Now, let's look at the content of Jesus' prayer that we should imitate.
This is what verse 42 says.
“Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done” (Luke 22:42).
As I mentioned before, the representative prayers are repentance prayer, gratitude prayer, supplication prayer and intercessory prayer.
There is no need to pray for repentance because Jesus is sinless.
However, we are always weak and fall, so we must pray for repentance every day. Also, Jesus often gave thanks and praised God.
And Jesus prayed to God
Representative among them is the prayer in the text we read today.
“Not my will, but your will be done.”
This is in fact the standard and model of prayer.
This prayer is not a prayer that fulfills my will, my thoughts and desires, but a prayer of faith in which my thoughts and my will keep dying and disappearing while praying, discovering God's will for me, and praying for that will to be fulfilled.
I hope this prayer will be a prayer for all of us.
And Jesus prayed like this in John 17:1
“Father, the time has come. Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you.” (John 17:1).
This prayer is also a prayer before the cross. If you look here, Jesus is praying, ‘Let the Son glorify the Father’.
From these words, we can see that Jesus' lifelong prayer topic and desire was to glorify God.
Since the Lord tells us to pray for our daily bread, we can also ask God for help with many of our earthly needs.
But first of all, I hope that our petitions can become prayers like Jesus’ prayer, ‘not my will, but yours,’ and ‘glorify God throughout your life.’
And Jesus did intercessory prayer. As I said before, John 17 is the entire chapter of Jesus' prayer, one-third of which is a prayer for the Lord Himself and the other two-thirds is a prayer for the Lord's disciples. and the prayer for the church established by the disciples of the Lord.
That's why two-thirds were intercessory prayers.
This leads us to assume that many of the contents of Jesus' prayers were mostly intercessory prayers.
And if you look at the content of the prayer, verse 11, “so that they may be one as we are one,” and verse 17, “Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth..”
The Lord prayed for His disciples to be one in love in the Word and in the Holy Spirit, just as God and the Lord are one.
He also prayed for the disciples to be sanctified by the truth of the Lord's Word.
Jesus also interceded while dying on the cross.
“Jesus said, "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing."” (Luke 23:34).
The Lord prayed earnestly to the soldiers who crucified Him, asking God to forgive them and save them.
The Lord said, “But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,” (Matt. 5:44), and he put it into practice as he said.
I think that this kind of prayer was a prayer that greatly moved Dr. Luke.
However, the Bible says that the Lord who earnestly interceded for His disciples and even for His enemies is still the Lord who prays for us at the right hand of the throne of God.
“Who is he that condemns? Christ Jesus, who died--more than that, who was raised to life--is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us.” (Romans 8:34).
I believe that even if we think of the love of Jesus, who loves us and is still praying for us despite our inadequacies and weaknesses, we must gather our strength and live as people of faith, people of the Word and prayer.
And finally, let's look at why we should be diligent in prayer.
The reason we must pray is because the Lord Himself said that if we do not pray, even believers can fall into temptation.
Let's look at verses 40 and 46.
“On reaching the place, he said to them, "Pray that you will not fall into temptation."” (Luke 22:40).
“"Why are you sleeping?" he asked them. "Get up and pray so that you will not fall into temptation."” (Luke 22:46).
Everyone, if there is no prayer, it is easy to live according to our own will, according to our own will, not according to Heavenly Father's will.
It is easy to fall into the traps dug by the enemy. Look at David.
He was arrogant and negligent, and all his subordinates went to war and were fighting, but he did not pray and walked leisurely on the roof of the palace.
He have seen what he shouldn't have seen and committed a great sin.
Therefore, we who believe in Jesus believe that we must wake up and pray in order to overcome these temptations and temptations given by the devil.
Jesus' ministry was always full of outward miracles, but inwardly, behind it was always Jesus' prayer. Some say that Jesus' prayer made miracles possible.
Yes, we often refer to Jesus' three major ministries as teaching, preaching the gospel, and healing. If you look closely at the Bible, you can see that Jesus always prayed before doing such a ministry.
Therefore, we also believe that no matter what kind of ministry or service we do in the church, prayer must always precede, and that any ministry or service will be right when the foundation work called prayer is well established.
The Bible tells us to “pray continually;” (1 Thessalonians 5:17).
It says, “And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests.” (Ephesians 6:18), and “Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful.” (Colossians 4:2).
The Bible commands us to pray always, to pray like breathing, to continue praying without ceasing.
Guys, sometimes we have a hard time praying, and there may be times when we don't know what to pray for and when we don't know how to pray.
Whenever that happens, think of the prayer of Jesus. Read these words of Jesus praying.
The prayer of Jesus was not actually a prayer for Jesus himself.
There was never a time when Jesus said to God, “Let me earn a lot of money, give me a good house, give me a high position, make me successful and famous”
Please remember that only Jesus' prayer was "Let the Son glorify God the Father" and "Do not do my will as I will, but as you will, as you will be done" and Please don't forget that most of the prayers of the Lord's were intercessory prayers for the Lord's disciples and churches who are weak in many ways and for the people who are wandering due to sin.
And please don't forget this word that the Lord is still praying for us who are weak.
Let us also be challenged by the prayer that Jesus himself showed us.
let's be inspired
And let's be strong and pray like Jesus
At that time, I believe that our prayers will also become deep prayers like Jesus' powerful prayers and prayers that please God.
