주일설교(Sermon) 약(James) 5:13-14
“Prayer exhortation of James who experienced the power of prayer”
Christianity is often referred to as a religion of experience.
It means that it is a religion that has the experience of meeting the living God and meeting the grace of the cross of Jesus.
And it is also called the religion of change. Life is changed by meeting God and experiencing the grace of the cross of Jesus.
Therefore, Christianity can be said to be a religion that experiences change.
A typical example is the apostle Paul, who originally persecuted and imprisoned believers in Jesus.
But after he met Jesus, he changed from a persecutor, accuser, and mocker to a defender, an evangelist, and a man who suffered martyrdom for the gospel.
We doesn't know how many people have met the Lord, experienced transformation, and become dedicated to the Lord in this way, not only in the Bible but also in the history of the church and even today.
James, who recorded the book of James we read today, is also a person who experienced such a change.
James is often mistaken for James who was among the 12 disciples of Jesus, but he is not.
They are James son of Zebedee (brother of John) and also James son of Alphaeus, but James here refers to James, the younger brother of Jesus.
However, what we should pay attention to is that this James, who also wrote in the book of James and is speaking these precious words about prayer today, was originally a person who did not believe in Jesus very well.
A representative example of this is found in John 7.
“For even his own brothers did not believe in him.” (John 7:5).
I don't know the reason deeply, but anyway, Jesus' brothers did not believe in Jesus as the Son of God.
But then James changed. It is not known exactly when James started to believe in Jesus, but scholars estimate that he experienced the resurrection of Jesus and began to believe in it.
And we see James, who rarely appears in the Gospels, finally appear in Acts 1. What kind of scene is this? When the disciples of the Lord prayed to receive the Holy Spirit in the upper room of Mark as Jesus had commanded, James, the mother of Mary, was there right there. and was with other siblings
Let's read Acts 1:13 and 14 together.
“When they arrived, they went upstairs to the room where they were staying. Those present were Peter, John, James and Andrew; Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew; James son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot, and Judas son of James. They all joined together constantly in prayer, along with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers." (Acts 1:13-14).
And finally James experienced the presence, fullness, and strong gift of the Holy Spirit like a fiery wind with those he prayed with on the day of Pentecost.
There he passionately experienced the power of prayer and the power of the Holy Spirit.
And since then, he has not only been a witness to the resurrection of the gospel, but also devoted himself to prayer.
He always got down on his knees and prayed, and his knees became like camel's knees, so he was nicknamed 'the man with camel's knees'.
Think about it, everyone.
How many times must he have repented and prayed earnestly while calling his brother Jesus, who once called him brother and did not believe that he was the son of God?
In the midst of that, how many answers to prayer and the power of prayer have you experienced?
Pastor George Mueller said that he received over 50,000 answers to his prayers in his lifetime, but I came to think that this James must have had as many testimonies of prayer as he did, or even more than that.
He is talking about prayer in today's text.
Look at verse 13 first
“Is any one of you in trouble? He should pray. Is anyone happy? Let him sing songs of praise.” (James 5:13).
Everyone, in our life, there are not always only hardships and not only happy things, but there are times when there are hardships and there are times when there are joyful things.
However, do not be discouraged and depressed because there are hardships and sufferings, but believe in God's goodness and rely on God and pray.
Also, we are advised not to be arrogant or conceited, as if we have done well, as if we have achieved it on our own, but always know that it has gone well with God's grace and praise God with a grateful heart.
Everyone, especially when we are suffering, it is easy for us believers to get discouraged, easily get frustrated, and complain easily, but please humbly pray to God at this time.
I believe that God will give us the strength to overcome the hardships, the strength to endure them, and the grace to learn the precious wisdom of faith while passing through the hardships.
It is said that it happened in the United States a long time ago. Someone opened a restaurant. He prepared well and researched the recipe before opening the restaurant.
The owner was anxious and thought about this and that, and then came to the thought, “I didn’t rely on God, so I must pray.”
And he said he prayed to God from then on.
He said that he honestly confessed his troubled heart to God.
He continued to pray like that, but after a while, a realization came to his heart. “Just treat any customer with all your heart and love, just like you would treat your parents and children with food.”
So, he believes that this is God's guidance and really diligently prepares and serves food with sincerity and love.
Surprisingly, the person who came to the restaurant once kept coming back and it became so prosperous that customers lined up to come in.
He thanked God and prayed, “I have received many blessings through God’s grace. What should I do now?”
Again, this feeling came to his heart.
The thought came to his mind: “For whoever comes to your house, do not just treat well the food, but also try to provide spiritual food, help as many people as you know and serve as much as you can."
So he decided to do that and put it into practice. One day, a judge who came as a regular customer was having lunch with a worried face on his face.
So the owner approached and asked why he was worried today. Then the judge said that there was a divorce case that was really difficult, and that he was so worried about what the future of their children would be like if they got divorced.
Then the owner tells his story
“Judge, actually, when I first opened this restaurant, there were too few customers, so I prayed to God and He gave me wisdom.
Judge, pray to God earnestly, and God will give you wisdom.”
He said that he advised the judge
Then he said yes, and the judge went back. The next day at lunch, he came back with a smile on his face and said,
“Ah, because I do as you said, it will happen. When I was young, I went to church, but I didn’t pray much, but this time I prayed earnestly for the family and as I prayed, I honestly told them everything that came to my mind. It's done. Then it was resolved safely.”
Everyone, please believe that those who have experienced God's grace by praying in the midst of suffering can help those who are suffering and become a channel of God's spiritual blessings.
And verse 14
“Is any one of you sick? He should call the elders of the church to pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord.” (James 5:14).
Guys, even if we believe in Jesus, suffering comes and we also get sick. This is unavoidable. However, when we are suffering, especially when we have a serious disease, we believers should be a little different from the way people in the world deal with it.
What does James say today?
He recommends that the elders of the church, or leaders, visit the sick and pray earnestly with the love of the Lord.
This doesn't mean don't go to the hospital when you're sick. It doesn't mean don't take medicine. But first, trust in God and pray to God.
A pastor said that when some people get sick, they go to all the hospitals to find out how to treat them humanly, and if it doesn't work, there are people who finally talk to the church and ask the pastor.
It is not to do that. First, tell the church that the elders of the church, that is, the church leaders, come and pray earnestly together.
In other words, seek God first.
Folks, we can compare the way the two kings of the Old Testament dealt with serious illnesses here.
First, let's look at King Hezekiah. In Isaiah 38, King Hezekiah heard from the prophet Isaiah, "O King, God said, You will die of illness, so leave a will."
How did Hezekiah react at that time? Isaiah 38
“Hezekiah turned his face to the wall and prayed to the LORD,
"Remember, O LORD, how I have walked before you faithfully and with wholehearted devotion and have done what is good in your eyes." And Hezekiah wept bitterly." (Isaiah 38:2-3).
King Hezekiah said that he did not seek doctors first, but prayed to God first.
And King Hezekiah was blessed with an extension of his life by 15 years.
But King Asa, king of Judah, was different. 2 Chronicles 16:12
“In the thirty-ninth year of his reign Asa was afflicted with a disease in his feet. Though his disease was severe, even in his illness he did not seek help from the LORD, but only from the physicians.” (2 Chronicles 16:12).
When Hezekiah was sick, he sought God first, but King Asa did not seek God first, and he relied only on doctors, but two years later he died alone.
Guys, what is really important in our life of faith? Jesus said
“But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” (Matthew 6:33).
God comes first, and God's will must come first. This priority should not change. Worship comes first, prayer and praise come first. The Word must come first.
Worldly success and health, money and knowledge should not take precedence over God.
It is said that there was a famous American surgeon named Dr. Mingay. However, this person always earnestly prayed to God for the operation for the patient before surgery. The background of this person is as follows
Dr. Mingay was originally from a poor rural area in Canada and studied hard to study medicine and become a doctor.
He went to church as a child, but stopped going to church while he was in college, and even after becoming a doctor, he forgot to go to church.
He forgot God's words, prayed, and worshiped.
Then one day he got a call from his brother.
“Brother, our mother was seriously injured when she was struck by a bull while working in the field.
I went to a hospital near here and the doctor said there was no hope to live.
Come quickly and do our mother's surgery."
Hearing this news, Dr. Mingay hurriedly rented a plane and rushed to a special plane with a nurse and a doctor to assist.
He looked at his mother and saw that she had passed out with several broken ribs from being run over by a bull.
He had to do surgery, but when he was about to operate on his elderly mother, his hands were shaking so much that he couldn't do it. No matter how hard he tried to calm himself down, he couldn't calm down. At that time, he remembered praying to God when he was a child.
So he sat down on the kitchen chair and prayed earnestly.
“God help me, please save my mother, if you help me this time, I will live for you.”
It is said that she prayed earnestly like this. Then, his heart gradually calmed down and his hands stopped shaking, and through an operation that lasted several hours, her mother was able to be revived from danger.
And from then on, Dr. Mingay worked hard in his life of faith while being grateful for God's grace.
And he is a doctor who always prays to God for his patients during surgery and has become a faithful doctor who always evangelizes patients and people around him to believe in God and believe in Jesus.
Guys, no matter what occupation we have, God comes first. God's glory comes first. No matter what disease or difficulty we encounter, we believe that when we pray to God first and rely on Him, a good God will guide us in good ways.
It also tells us to anoint with oil and pray.
Healing by anointing with oil and praying was the way Jesus' disciples had practiced it before.
In Mark 6, it says, "They went out and preached that people should repent. They drove out many demons and anointed many sick people with oil and healed them" (Mark 6:12-13).
It is said that praying while anointing with oil continued for a long time in the early church.
However, these days, as far as I know, it is also a method of prayer that is hard to find in Korean churches.
However, a pastor said that when he went to study in the United States, he saw Methodist pastors always carrying a small oil can and anointing the sick with oil and praying.
So, when asked why he prayed like that, he answered that he prayed because the Bible tells us to pray like that while speaking the words of today's text.
That is why the pastor said that he brought an oil can and prayed for the sick even when he came to Korea.
I also think that praying with oil is a good way to pray because oil symbolizes God's grace and the anointing of grace.
And in fact, there is a more important word than oil: “ pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord.”
Actually, the most important thing than anointing with oil is to believe in the name of the Lord, that is, believe in the name of Jesus, the name of salvation, healing, life and power given to us, and pray in that name.
Jesus also promised in “If you ask me for anything in my name, I will do it” (John 14:14).
When people of faith become one in Jesus and earnestly pray with love and compassion as they truly believe in, are grateful for, and are thrilled with the glory, grace, and love of the name of Jesus given to us, the Lord will be with them as like He said that, “For where two or three come together in my name, there am I with them."(Matthew 18:20)
And I believe that our God will be happy to receive such a prayer.
I hope you and I will pray even in the midst of hardship.
Praise and worship God when you are happy
I believe that if there is anyone who is sick, the church should be a church that prays earnestly in the name of Jesus to be healed together, especially with the leaders of the church.
Also, I believe that the church should be a church where souls who do not know the Lord come to the Lord and earnestly pray for salvation.
I believe that when we earnestly seek the love of the Lord, with a compassionate heart, and with faith in the power and life of the name of Jesus, God will answer us kindly.
Lastly, there is a word that I always think of when I pray for the church, a prayer that the church must do as a community.
That's Acts 4:29 and 30.
“Now, Lord, consider their threats and enable your servants to speak your word with great boldness.
Stretch out your hand to heal and perform miraculous signs and wonders through the name of your holy servant Jesus.” (Acts 4:29-30)
This prayer is the content of the actual prayer that the Jerusalem church saints offered to God with one heart when the apostles were persecuted.
And when they had finished praying, God answered them in verse 31.
“After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly.” (Acts 4:31).
Therefore, dear ones
Pray for the pastors and for the churches.
Please pray earnestly for the Lord to become a church where the Word and prayer are alive, so souls are saved and the sick are healed.
Dear friends, I said that the basics of our faith are the Word and prayer.
I bless you and I to become people of a deeper Word.
And as the depth of the Word deepens, I bless you to become people of deeper prayer.
So, I earnestly hope and bless that you and I will be used more preciously and honored by God.
