May 15 2022
“Luke’s love and devotion to Theophilus”
Before speaking today, I would like to ask you two questions.
what's the question
First of all, most of you who attend this worship believe in Jesus, so the first question is how did you come to believe in Jesus?
And the second question is, then, what kind of devotion have you done to introduce someone to the Jesus you believe in?
If there are people who answer yes to this second question
I bless you and hope you continue so in the future
And if the answer is no
I encourage and bless you who can devote their precious devotion to sharing Jesus in the future.
As you know, Luke and Acts are books written by the physician Luke for one man Theophilus.
Today’s text, Acts 1:1, also begins with “Theophilus.”
Let's read the text again today.
"In my former book, Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus began to do and to teach until the day he was taken up to heaven, after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles he had chosen"(Acts1:1-2)
So who is Theophilus?
In Luke 1, it says, “Therefore, since I myself have carefully investigated everything from the beginning, it seemed good also to me to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus,
so that you may know the certainty of the things you have been taught.” (Luke 1:3-4). It is recorded that he used the word “most excellent,” so it is presumed that he was a high-ranking official or aristocrat of the Roman Empire.
It seems that Luke came to know and evangelize such a high-ranking person.
So Luke wrote the Gospel of Luke and Acts and sent it to Theophilus to introduce Jesus and what happened to the church after the resurrection and ascension of Jesus, and it is being transmitted to all of us in the New Testament today
The fact that Luke wrote and sent so many texts for one person, Theophilus, shows that Luke clearly had the utmost devotion and love for Theophilus.
And it shows that he valued the soul of a man very much
This is a big challenge for us.
And it is thought that this kind of heart was learned from the apostle Paul, who was the spiritual teacher of Luke.
Because even the apostle Paul cherished each soul
Of course, Paul thought of the whole church and sent letters to several churches as you know, but he wrote 1 and 2 Timothy for that one person, his beloved disciple Timothy.
And Paul wrote Titus for his beloved disciple Titus and Philemon for his beloved Philemon.
In particular, the book of Philemon was written in hopes that Philemon would forgive and have mercy on Onesimus, the servant of Philemon's house, whom he had been evangelizing in a Roman prison.
"I appeal to you for my son Onesimus, who became my son while I was in chains. Formerly he was useless to you, but now he has become useful both to you and to me.
I am sending him--who is my very heart--back to you." (Philemon 1:10-12)
In this way, Paul preached the gospel in front of many people.
Although he dealt with many people, he always had a heart to cherish each and every one of them.
This is the heart and attitude our Lord showed us as sinners when he came into this world.
It is also what the Lord wants all of us who believe in Him to have.
In Luke 15, Jesus said:
“"Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Does he not leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it?
And when he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders
and goes home. Then he calls his friends and neighbors together and says, 'Rejoice with me; I have found my lost sheep.'
I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent.” (Luke 15:4-7).
Folks, here the Lord spoke of the parable of the hundred sheep.
Among them, it is important to date and be together with the 99 children of God who have been saved, but one sheep who has not been saved.
In other words, it teaches us that we must do our best for the salvation of that one soul who has not yet been saved.
And the Lord is saying that if we dedicate ourselves to one soul and finally return that soul to the Lord, there will be a feast of great joy in heaven
Everyone, therefore, like Luke, we all need to share the Jesus we believe in to someone.
I hope that it will be me and you who can pour love and devotion, cherish even the souls of unbelievers, pour out our hearts to them, and share the gospel with them.
Do you all remember the late Dr. Hwang Su-gwan?
Dr. Hwang Sugwan was evangelizing on a train, and he also evangelized to a certain Yonsei University medical professor.
With that as an opportunity, the professor at this university of medicine is currently hiring a professor at the university, so he asked him to apply. After applying, he was accepted and became an adjunct professor at Yonsei University College of Medicine.
Even if not, Dr. Hwang, who worked hard to evangelize, also evangelized diligently at Severance Hospital with joy.
When Dr. Hwang saw one patient among them, he was unable to come and take care of him because the guardians were busy.
So he asked his wife to make porridge in the morning, brought it to him every day and prayed while holding hands.
After a few days, this patient was moved and wept and asked, “Can I believe in Jesus whom you believe?”
The heart and devotion of Dr. Sugwan Hwang, who loved and showed compassion for the patient, touched the patient.
Folks, however, there are some of us who think that evangelism is something that must be done verbally.
This is because Romans 10:17 says, “Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word of Christ.” (Romans 10:17).
So, when we think of evangelism, we tend to think, 'That's right, it is only by hearing the word that we can have faith', so we tend to think that we must deliver it with words.
However, this does not necessarily mean that faith comes only through hearing. Of course, it is true that faith mainly comes through hearing.
but think
If you are deaf, you cannot hear. What to do?
Either sign language or let your eyes read the Word and the Gospel
When they read, the same thing happens to their heart
Even if you read it, you can have faith as long as the Holy Spirit works
I remember hearing the testimony of a certain sister. That sister one day received an evangelism from a friend and went to church. Then, she met Jesus personally and believed in Jesus as the Savior. She was so happy
But she wanted to convey this to her loving parents, but she was not confident and did not have the courage. Then, while praying earnestly to God, an idea came to her: Write a letter to her parents.
She confessed that she was so happy that she met Jesus, and said that she hoped that her loving mother and father would believe in Jesus and have eternal life and live happily just like her.
And she confessed that she loved Mom and Dad and that she gave birth to her and raised her, and carefully wrote the words that she would become a daughter who respects her parents more in the Lord and delivered them to her parents.
And the parents said that they were moved when they read the letter
And they said that they decided to believe in Jesus, who changed their daughter into happiness, and they went to church together.
How precious testimonies?
If you, too, have parents, siblings, or close friends who still do not know Jesus, I would recommend this method if you feel it is difficult to communicate in words.
Of course, when preaching the gospel, it does not matter whether we do it in writing or verbally or by doing good deeds, which is better.
What really matters is how much you truly love that soul and give your heart to that soul.
And if you pray earnestly with love, I believe that God will teach you a good way.
I would like to share with you a precious testimony that I heard in a pastor's sermon several years ago.
A couple attended the church, and it is said that both of them were blind.
This couple had been going to church diligently for a while, and one day a brother said he had something to say to the pastor.
So, when the pastor heard the circumstances, the story is that his hometown is Suncheon, Jeollanam-do, and no matter how many phone calls his parents make, they say they go to church only by word of mouth, but they don’t go to church on Sunday. So he decided to go down on Saturday, sleep one night, and go to church with his parents on Sunday.
So it was said that he would not be able to come to church on Sundays for a while, so the pastor fervently prayed a blessing for this brother.
The church is not just a church, but it is said that they did their best to save the souls of their parents by visiting or moving to see if the gospel is really alive and the church is filled with the Holy Spirit.
He changed buses a few times from Suseo, Gyeonggi-do, and went to his hometown, Suncheon, to love his parents and to lead them to salvation.
Isn't that the son's precious devotion and love for his parents?
It is said that his parents eventually came to believe in Jesus as well. Hallelujah
Everyone, then, what happened to Theophilus when he saw the records of Luke's Gospel and Acts that contained Luke's love and devotion?
Did he believe in jesus? the answer is yes
Look, in the previous Gospel of Luke, it is clearly said, “most excellent Theophilus” (Luke 1:3).
But today, in Acts 1, he says, “Theophilus,” and refers to him as a friend, like a brother.
What does this tell? When Theophilus read the Gospel of Luke and was moved by Luke's love and devotion, he was also moved by the Holy Spirit to accept Jesus as the Savior.
So, before Luke, he had no choice but to use the title of 'most excellent', which refers to the status of a class rank.
He could never speak rudely to a person of high rank, but now he has become a brother of faith in Jesus
And Theophilus himself humbled himself and became a friend to Luke. So Luke came to say 'Theophilus'
hallelujah yes
In fact, in Jesus Christ, we are all children of God, and in Jesus we are one brother and sister. All are equal and honorable.
There is no high or low rank or rank.
This is the power of the gospel, the equality enjoyed in the gospel, and the beauty of the kingdom of God.
In any case, Luke's devotion and love for Theophilus, who did this, bore beautiful fruits.
So how about you?
Who is Theophilus whom you should love, serve, and preach the gospel with all your heart?
Wouldn't you like to find your Theophilus?
And why not pray earnestly for him and preach the gospel with the wisdom that God gives?
“He said to them, "Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation.” (Mark 16:15).
Evangelism is a command from the Lord
It is not something you can do or can't do, it is the Lord's great command that you must obey.
I believe that when we all preach the gospel with the love and devotion that Luke had, people who believe in the Lord and change will be created like Theophilus, who came to believe in Jesus through Luke.
I bless you in the name of the Lord that I and you all live while carrying out this precious mission, always giving thanks for the grace of the Lord, and walking with the Lord in joy.
