(Judah’s Beautiful Heart to Imitate)
May is Month of the Family
The family can be said to be a divine institution created by God directly along with the church. And in particular, the family is the root and foundation of all communities.
The family becomes the foundation for the church, society, the nation, and the entire human race.
Therefore, building healthy and happy families is so important that it is the foundation and cornerstone of any healthy and mature community.
So the Bible says a lot about the family.
Of course, there is no one righteous and no perfect man after man has sinned.
Everyone must live by the grace of God and the blood of Jesus on the cross.
Likewise, no family in the world is perfect. Like all humans, every family has its problems and weaknesses.
And there are the continual temptations of Satan the devil.
But God sent us Jesus and He also gave us the Holy Spirit and the Bible
Therefore, I believe that all our families will live a victorious life, a holy life, and a life that glorifies God when we live according to the Word by the power of the Lord's blood and the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
So, what kind of family does the Bible describe as a family that is precious in the sight of God and a happy family?
First, let's take a look at the exemplary family that Proverbs suggests. Proverbs 15:16-17
“Better a little with the fear of the LORD than great wealth with turmoil. Better a meal of vegetables where there is love than a fattened calf with hatred” (Proverbs 15:16-17).
A family that fears God, our Creator, that is, a family that is united in faith, a family that loves each other, and a harmonious family, regardless of how much or little we have, is a blessed and mature family. This is the ideal family presented in the Old Testament is
Then what about the ideal family presented in the New Testament?
This is Ephesians 6
“Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.
Honor your father and mother"--which is the first commandment with a promise--that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.
Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.” (Ephesians 6:1-4).
The Apostle Paul says that a blessed family is a family in which parents respect their parents in the Lord and their children are well nurtured by the word of God.
And Paul is talking about married couples in the latter part of Ephesians 5
By comparing the marriage relationship to the relationship between the church and the Lord, it is telling the husband and wife to love and serve each other as the Lord did to the church and the church to the Lord
In this way, God speaks of a family that respects and loves each other along with deep faith in God, a family that loves each other between husband and wife, parents and children, brothers and sisters, as a beautiful family in the sight of God.
And at the same time, God is telling us to wish, expect, pray, nurture, and build such a family.
Today's text tells the story of a family. The father of this family is Jacob. He had 4 wives and 12 sons.
The eleventh of them was Joseph, and Joseph was sold as a slave to Egypt because of the jealousy of his brothers.
Although he went through many hardships and sufferings, he faithfully trusted and believed God. So God was always with him and blessed him.
And finally, by the grace of God, he became the prime minister of Egypt.
But suddenly there was a great famine in the ancient Near East. But Egypt, with the wisdom of Joseph, stored the leftover grains from the preceding 7 years of abundance in storage, so there was plenty of grain.
Not only in Egypt, but in Canaan as well as in the land of Canaan, there was nothing to eat. Finally, when Jacob heard that there was a lot of grain in the land of Egypt, he ordered his sons to buy grain.
He sent all ten of his sons to Egypt, leaving behind Benjamin, the youngest of the 11 remaining sons.
And when they arrived in Egypt, Joseph recognized his brothers, but the brothers did not recognize Joseph, who had changed so much.
So Joseph decided to test his brothers in two ways.
The first test was that Joseph told his brothers, 'You are spies from the land of Canaan. If not, go and bring your brother.'
And the brothers went and reported this to their father Jacob. At first, Jacob refused, but as time went on and the grain ran out, he decided to take Benjamin and go to Egypt.
So they brought Benjamin to Egypt.
Again, Joseph recognized Benjamin, but Benjamin did not recognize his brother Joseph. Joseph, who went into the house alone and wept bitterly, made a great feast for them.
And Joseph's brothers bought grain again and went home.
So Joseph had the steward put his silver cup in the sack of Benjamin's grain, secretly from the brothers.
It was a second test to see what their brotherhood was like.
And after a while, Joseph's steward comes after them and they are returning to the land of Canaan, and says, "Stop for a moment. After you left, our master's silver cup was gone.
Our master has been kind to you, how can you repay his kindness with such evil?”
Then they protest, saying we never did that.
And they said, “If any of your servants is found to have it, he will die; and the rest of us will become my lord's slaves.” (Genesis 44:9).
the steward answered
“Very well, then," he said, "let it be as you say. Whoever is found to have it will become my slave; the rest of you will be free from blame.''” (Genesis 44:10).
But what is this? Joseph's silver cup was found in Benjamin's grain sack. So they tore their clothes in bitter heart.
And when Joseph's brothers came back to his house, they fell on the ground before him.
Joseph said to his brothers
“How did you do this to me?”
Judas answers this, verse 16.
“"What can we say to my lord?" Judah replied. "What can we say? How can we prove our innocence? God has uncovered your servants' guilt. We are now my lord's slaves--we ourselves and the one who was found to have the cup."” (Genesis 44:16).
Judas and his brothers were suspicious of Benjamin and did not ask, 'How can you do this?' they trusted Benjamin
And they thought that God was behind all this. They thought that God was now punishing them for the sins they had committed against Joseph
Here you can find Judas and his brothers deeply repenting of their sins before God. You can see Judah's deepened faith in God here.
Mature Faith Always Comes With Repentance
When you realize how ugly, dirty, and weak you are in front of God and sincerely repent, God will bless such a person, and that person will fear and love God more.
And they said before that if anyone comes out of the sack of silver, he will die and we will all be slaves, but now Judas changes his words
“We are now my lord's slaves--we ourselves and the one who was found to have the cup.”
'We certainly didn't steal this silver cup, but God punishes us for the great sins of our past, so we will be punished together.
Please do not kill our brother Benjamin, whom silver cup was found, and we will all be punished together.”
In Judas' words of shared responsibility, we can feel a deep brotherly love.
In the past, the brothers who tried to kill Joseph because they hated Joseph, who was favored by his father Jacob, were no longer the ones who sold them to merchants.
All the parents in the world want to live with deep brotherhood and friendship between their children, not to hate and fight with each other as enemies.
However, we often see brothers fighting each other like enemies over their parents' inheritance and inheritance.
You should know that this is really against parents
Then Joseph said, "Far be it from me to do such a thing! Only the man who was found to have the cup will become my slave. The rest of you, go back to your father in peace."(verse 17)
Then again Judas, on behalf of the brothers, spoke to Joseph.
This is what verses 18-34 say
As Judah explained to Joseph what had happened, one of his father Jacob's sons died in old age, and he loves his younger brother Benjamin very much. If we don't take him back to our father, our father may die of great discouragement and heartbreak. so please don't do that. Please, make Judah himself a servant of the Lord in Benjamin's place, and he earnestly asks that this child be allowed to return to his father's house.
"So now, if the boy is not with us when I go back to your servant my father and if my father, whose life is closely bound up with the boy's life, sees that the boy isn't there, he will die. Your servants will bring the gray head of our father down to the grave in sorrow.“(Genesis44:30-31)
"Now then, please let your servant remain here as my lord's slave in place of the boy, and let the boy return with his brothers. How can I go back to my father if the boy is not with me? No! Do not let me see the misery that would come upon my father."(Genesis44:33-34)
Here, we can see Judah's deep love for Benjamin, his brother, his utmost filial piety for his father Jacob, and at the same time, Judas' deep sacrificial spirit to save his brother and his father even by sacrificing himself.
In this way, Judas shows his reverence for God, his deep brotherly love, his supreme love for his father, and his self-sacrificing spirit
And Joseph, who was watching all this, was deeply moved by Judah's words and actions and wept. they passed both exams
Joseph's resentment and longing for his brothers, and his longing for his younger brother Benjamin and father Jacob, which had been accumulated in his heart, exploded like a flood of water, and he wept in a loud voice.
They were tears of forgiveness and tears of joy and emotion. In this way, the separated brothers were able to reunite as a family with joy and live in Egypt loving each other.
Folks, we need to pay attention to Judas here.
The protagonist of the story in the second half of Genesis is undoubtedly Joseph.
He received God's blessing because he did not lose faith in the midst of suffering and always depended on God, and Joseph brought his father and brothers to Egypt and gave them grace so that they could live well.
Through his deep devotion, filial piety, and brotherly love for his brothers and sisters, he received great blessings before God.
But what about Judas?
As we shared today, he too impresses God with mature faith in God, repentance, deep brotherly love, and filial piety toward his father, and by moving Joseph, the blessing that transforms a family of tragedy, division, and sorrow into a family of joy, unity, and love would have been given
In particular, through Judas, Judas was not the eldest son, but the fourth son, but through him, he received the tremendous blessing of forming the genealogy of the Messiah in which Jesus was born.
Everyone, on the occasion of Family Month in May and on Mother's Day today, I bless you that beautiful hearts like Judas may abound in us as well.
At that time, I believe that our family will also enjoy the abundant grace of God as a family of joy, unity, love and faith.
The beauty of believers is in their hearts
What kind of heart is the heart of a beautiful believer?
It is always a heart that fears God
It is always a heart of repentance, a heart of gratitude, and a heart of respect for parents. And to have a deep brotherhood and is to love each other. This is important in the family and it is very important in the church, the family of faith.
And a heart that knows how to sacrifice itself
This is humility. The Lord sacrificed Himself on the cross to lead us sinners to salvation.
I bless you in the name of the Lord and I hope that by always walking with the Lord, we can all become more like the Lord so that we can always humble ourselves and live a holy life that knows how to always serve, sacrifice and dedicate ourselves for the Lord, for the souls, and for the glory of God.
May, on the occasion of Family Month, once again, I bless you and your family in the name of the Lord that God's grace, peace, love, and hope will always be filled with you.
