주일설교(Sunday Sermon) 행(Acts) 10:1-2 May 1 2022
"a devout man and one who feared God with all his household"
Sometimes we have a really hard time putting up with something. For example, first of all, it's really hard to put up with being hungry. Try to starve for a day. Just the smell of eating makes you salivate
Also some people can't stand not talking
It seems that such a person can't stand it because his heart is stuffy if he doesn't talk.
So, there are people who need to talk for a while to relieve stress.
And then again, sometimes we can't hold back our questions
If we have a question and we do not know the answer, we are too curious.
For example, TV dramas that women love use this technique.
A drama develops a certain story and stops at an important point.
Then people will be so curious about the next one, so they make sure to watch it next time.
In today's text, we see a Roman centurion named Cornelius.
This man is so important because he was the first Gentile to be officially baptized and believe in Jesus. For Gentile Christians like us, Cornelius is the first senior
However, this man had a rather unusual career
He is a Roman military officer and is now in power as a ruler in Judea, a controlled country.
It is as if a Japanese military officer or police officer came to Korea when Japan ruled Korea in the old days. But the Bible records that this man was a godly man who feared God even before he believed in Jesus.
This means that he did not completely convert to Judaism by any chance while living in Judea, but he lived a righteous and reverent life before God and people by imitating the piety and ethics of the Jews.
However, the Bible explains in detail how he came to believe in Jesus throughout Acts 10 chapters.
God gave Cornelius and Peter a vision when they were praying to each other so that Cornelius invited Peter to his house.
Then, as they heard the gospel, the Holy Spirit came upon them
They speak in tongues and glorify God, just as they did in the upper room of Mark on the day of Pentecost in Acts 2, and Cornelius and his family and relatives were all baptized and became Christians.
But the Bible is silent about how he came to believe and fear the God of the Jews.
Of course, this is not a big obstacle to understanding Cornelius and receiving grace through the Word, but I was very, very curious.
What happened to his life?
I wondered how it would have been if Luke had heard this testimony of Cornelius and recorded it in more detail, and how it would have been if he recorded the story of how Cornelius and his family and friends lived after they believed in Jesus.
But to do that, perhaps the book of Acts would have to be larger.
That's right
What I regret most while reading the Bible is that there are too few records of Acts.
While talking about the disciples of the early church receiving the Holy Spirit and being transformed and revival, they were talking about persecution and scattering and preaching the gospel.
And after talking about Paul’s conversion, the apostle Paul went on a mission trip 5 times and he went to Rome as a prisoner, and Paul just preaching the gospel in Rome and ends with.
It's like an interesting drama that ended at an important point.
The story of the apostle Peter, the central figure in the beginning of the book of Acts, suddenly disappears in the middle.
And the story of Barnabas, who went on a missionary journey together with Paul at first, but broke up due to some problem and each went on a missionary journey, also disappears.
Also, among the 12 disciples of Jesus, the Bible is silent about the ministry of the 11 disciples, including Matthias, who came in instead of Judas Iscariot.
So I'm actually really curious about their stories personally.
In the Old Testament, as history books, there are 1, 2 Samuel, 1, 2 Kings, 1 and 2 Chronicles, and a vast amount is used to record the history of Israel. There are many overlaps.
However, in the New Testament, there is only one history book, Acts. So I thought there should have been at least a first and a second book of Acts
I am very curious about the back story of Peter, Paul, Barnabas, the other disciples, Philip, and those who were evangelized by these people.
Anyway, the Bible does not record how Cornelius, an elite Roman officer, came to believe in the God of Judaism.
So I looked up some data and saw the British biblical scholar William Barclay explaining this.
“Among the Roman citizens who stayed in Judea during the New Testament era, there were Romans who entered pious Judaism because they felt weary and disappointed with the immorality and lewdness of their many Roman and Greek gods.
Although they were not circumcised, they attended the synagogue, learned the Word, and followed the godly ethics of God and the Jews.”
And some biblical scholars have suggested that Cornelius may have been acquainted with and influenced by devout Jews while stationed in Caesarea.
And it is very likely that they introduced or gifted Cornelius the Septuagint, a translation of the Hebrew Old Testament into Greek.
The Old Testament, translated into Greek for Jews born in Gentile lands in the 2nd and 3rd centuries BC, was known to many at that time.
In this way, it seems that Cornelius received grace as he read, meditated, and studied this Greek Old Testament.
In this way, he discovered the living Creator God through the Old Testament and realized that God is not only the God of the Jews, but also the God of all mankind.
So he came to believe in and fear the only true God, not the numerous Roman gods he had ever worshiped.
The important thing here is that every human being has the right to seek, believe, and serve the true God.
It means that you should be able to find the true truth and the true God without being buried in your given religious, cultural, and ancestral environment.
Cornelius had such an investigator, the spirit of seeking the true truth. That is why he abandoned the Roman and Greek polytheisms and myths that he believed and followed from his ancestors and came to God the Creator, the true God.
Everyone, if you think that the God that Christianity believes is not the true God and not the true Creator, and that the God that Buddhism, Islam, or Hinduism believes is the true God, believe in and follow them.
we have freedom
However, no matter how much I study and think about it, I am convinced that there is no true God and savior other than the Holy Trinity God taught in the Bible other than Christianity.
This was also Joshua's conviction
“But if serving the LORD seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your forefathers served beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD.”(Joshua 24:15)
Joshua is a man who, along with Moses, experienced God's miracle of the Exodus.
And even after Moses died, he was a man who experienced many miracles of God, such as dividing the Jordan River and destroying the walls of Jericho.
He was convinced that only God is the Creator and that only God is the living King of kings.
So, before he is old enough to die, he gathers all the Israelites together and declares that me and my household will serve only the Lord God.
Choosing a religion and believing in what kind of god is totally different from what kind of school or job we go to or what kind of hobbies we pursue.
It determines my destiny and determines my eternity.
So we have to be really careful
Jesus says
“Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through me” (John 14:6).
The only way to God, to the eternal kingdom of heaven, is through Jesus
Jesus alone is our true Savior, who died and rose again for our sins.
And Cornelius wanted to believe in the wonderful God, the amazing God he had come to believe, not just himself, but with the whole family, so he encouraged his wife, children, and soldiers to believe in God. In fact, this is so natural
It is common sense to introduce things that are good for yourself to your loved ones.
So what happened?
It is written, “He and all his family were devout and God-fearing;” (Acts 10:2).
“When the angel who spoke to him had gone, Cornelius called two of his servants and a devout soldier who was one of his attendants.” (Acts 10:7).
It is said that all the family members feared God through Cornelius' evangelism, and godly people who feared God were born among the soldiers under Cornelius' evangelism.
He introduced God to his family and close people and lived a life of fearing God together.
And the Bible says that he helped a lot of the people.
“He and all his family were devout and God-fearing; he gave generously to those in need” (Acts 10:2).
It seems that he was moved and obeyed the words of compassion and help for the poor and the weak recorded in the Old Testament.
"When you reap the harvest of your land, do not reap to the very edges of your field or gather the gleanings of your harvest.
Do not go over your vineyard a second time or pick up the grapes that have fallen. Leave them for the poor and the alien. I am the LORD your God."(Leviticus19:9-10)
"There will always be poor people in the land. Therefore I command you to be openhanded toward your brothers and toward the poor and needy in your land."(Deuteronomy15:11)
Whether these words fit the sentiments of Cornelius, who was a kind and warm-hearted person by nature, or whether he was challenged by these words and changed into a person who can take care of his neighbors, I do not know exactly.
Anyway, the centurion Cornelius lived a life of giving and helping many people of Israel in difficult circumstances by obeying these words of God.
He actually came as a conqueror and ruler, so he could have been ignorant and turned away, but he gave what he had to the poor and marginalized.
So, in verse 22, it is written that Cornelius was praised and respected by all the people of Judea.
“The men replied, "We have come from Cornelius the centurion. He is a righteous and God-fearing man, who is respected by all the Jewish people. A holy angel told him to have you come to his house so that he could hear what you have to say."”(Acts 10:22)
Yes, if you say you fear God and love God, say you believe in and follow Jesus, but do not know how to love and serve your neighbors, your family, and the poor and marginalized, that is not true godliness.
Therefore, regarding true godliness, James says:
“Pure and undefiled religion in the sight of our God and Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself unstained by the world.” (James 1:27).
And the Bible says that Cornelius was “prayed to God continually.” (Acts 19:2).
The Greek word for ‘continually' in “prayed to God continually.” has two meanings.
The first means to pray regularly at a set time, and the second literally always means to pray on all occasions.
Then what was he mainly praying for?
Narrowly, he would have prayed for himself and his family to become more God-fearing, and that his subordinates, superiors, and fellow centurions would become more God-fearing.
And broadly, he seems to have prayed that the entire Roman Empire would cast away false myths and polytheism and become a nation that feared the living Creator God.
And that prayer was actually fulfilled during the later Roman Emperor Constantine.
Anyway, even though he was a Roman military officer, Cornelius came to Judea, believed in and feared God, and helped the Jewish people a lot and always prayed to God. He finally listened to Peter's sermon, received the Holy Spirit with his whole family, believed in Jesus, and was born again. He had the grace of becoming the official first Gentile Christian.
And I am convinced that Cornelius and his family have lived a precious life of giving, praying, and evangelism by reading and studying not only the Old Testament but also the words of Jesus and the New Testament since that day.
Beloved, today we meditated together on the godly life of Cornelius.
To summarize, his piety was first to introduce God to his family, friends, and close people, and to live a life of fearing God together.
The second is that he lived a life of helping the poor.
And the third is to always pray to God
We can't do the Lord's work on our own. We need God's help and we absolutely need God's grace, so we have to keep praying.
Therefore, we believe that we should learn and imitate the godly life of Cornelius, the first Gentile Christian.
But what is surprising is that this godly life was still the image of a person who believed only in the God of the Old Testament before believing in the gospel of the cross and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
In some ways, it appears that they lived a more reverent and holy life than the Spirit-filled Christians today.
This has been a big challenge for me
Many people today criticize Christians. They have a lot in their heads and talk a lot, but they do not live a godly life, a life that fears God in real life. It's a shameful reality
But Cornelius lived a beautiful, reverent and respectful life as God's people while believing, following, and obeying only the Old Testament.
If so, shouldn't we be able to live a true, faithful, and powerful godly life today as we read and believe not only the Old Testament but also the New Testament, receive the Holy Spirit, and believe in Jesus?
Personally, I will have a deep reflection along with a deep challenge.
And one more thing to remember is that even though Cornelius and his family believed in, feared God, did many good deeds, and prayed a lot through the Old Testament, after Jesus came and shed His blood and died on the cross for us who are sinners, and was resurrected, those things will happen. that you are not saved
Salvation comes only when we humbly believe in the merits of salvation accomplished through the cross and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
So Ephesians 2:8-9 says
“For by grace you have been saved, through faith, and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God, not by works, so that no one can boast” (Ephesians 2:8-9).
Even through the Old Testament, God valued Cornelius, who was living a very pious, sincere, and humble life of faith, so he sent Peter so that they could hear the gospel of Jesus Christ.
In the midst of this, he allowed us to enjoy the blessing of becoming the first Gentile Christian by receiving the Holy Spirit, being born again and being baptized.
Therefore, we must remember that we are not saved through godly living and good works, but salvation comes only through faith.
Don't forget that doing good deeds is not done to be saved, but because you are so thankful that you are saved.
Dear friends, in conclusion, there is power in the Word of God.
Whether it's the Old Testament or the New Testament, God's Word has amazing power.
And there is power in faith
Faith has the power to change our lives
If we really believe in the Bible as the Word of God and serve the Holy Trinity as the living and true God, our lives will change.
We will be reverent We will change ourselves, our homes will change, our churches will change.
We will pray more and serve the poor and marginalized with the Lord's love. Also, this gospel of life will be preached to those who do not know the gospel of salvation.
May this grace be with me and all of you in the name of the Lord
