“If you leave the Bible, your life will be a failure”
One of the common misconceptions people have is that people automatically mature and deepen as they get older.
Of course, it is also true that as people age, experience, knowledge, and wisdom accumulate as they mature.
However, we cannot say that everyone matures automatically.
It is especially true from a religious standpoint. It would be good for believers to naturally grow in their faith as they get older, but that does not necessarily mean that a person's faith grows with age.
Even with age, faith does not grow and may stagnate.
On the contrary, there are cases in which faith is regressed.
A prime example is King Solomon
In 1 Kings 11, we see that
As Solomon enjoyed wealth and glory, he married the princesses of several neighboring countries, namely Moam, Ammon, Edom, Sidon, and Heth. It was to keep peace with them.
So Solomon had seven hundred wives of royal birth and three hundred concubines, a total of a thousand women.
But what happened?
“As Solomon grew old, his wives turned his heart after other gods, and his heart was not fully devoted to the LORD his God, as the heart of David his father had been.” (1 Kings 11:4).
It is said 'As Solomon grew old', as a believer gets to know God more and more deeply as they get older, shouldn't they be more humble and spiritually mature before God?
So, despite the need to evangelize the foreign women to give up their idols and believe in the living God, Solomon committed the sin of following the foreign gods that the women brought in.
This has greatly offended and angered God.
Solomon, who was pleased with God because he had pure and humble faith in the old days, has now grown old and has become such a different person.
So, looking at verses 9-10, we find these words
“The LORD became angry with Solomon because his heart had turned away from the LORD, the God of Israel, who had appeared to him twice.
Although he had forbidden Solomon to follow other gods, Solomon did not keep the LORD's command.” (1 Kings 11:9-10).
God was angry with Solomon and he appeared to him twice and told him not to follow other gods, but it is recorded that he did not obey God's command.
So God said, “So the LORD said to Solomon, "Since this is your attitude and you have not kept my covenant and my decrees, which I commanded you, I will most certainly tear the kingdom away from you and give it to one of your subordinates.” (1 Kings 11:11).
We can see here that one can grow and mature more spiritually as a person gets older, but on the other hand, if done wrong, not only does his faith regress, but on the contrary, he becomes more arrogant and only bad stubbornness.
It is possible to lose the innocence and humility of childhood or youth.
This is also the case with King Saul. If you become proud like this, you will be rejected before God.
God is gracious to the humble, but hates the proud and opposes them.
So, is there any secret to not becoming like Solomon like this and to continue to grow spiritually even when we get older?
Yes we can find the secret in the members of the Thessalonian church
The Thessalonian church was a church that the Apostle Paul really praised, and it was a church that was an example for all believers.
“And so you became a model to all the believers in Macedonia and Achaia.” (1 Thessalonians 1:7).
And the Thessalonian church members continued to grow in faith and were rich in love for one another.
“We ought always to thank God for you, brothers, and rightly so, because your faith is growing more and more, and the love every one of you has for each other is increasing.” (2 Thessalonians 1:3).
However, the situation the Thessalonian church was in was not smooth. It was a church that had many tribulations and persecution.
However, their faith continued to grow, their love for one another increased, and they set an example for the believers.
What's the secret?
It was the love of the word
“You became imitators of us and of the Lord; in spite of severe suffering, you welcomed the message with the joy given by the Holy Spirit. (1 Thessalonians 1:6).
They said that they received the word with joy even though they were in the midst of many tribulations. This means that they always had joy in reading, hearing, learning, studying, and putting into practice the word of the Bible.
There is also a verse that shows the attitude of the Thessalonian church members toward the Word of God.
“And we also thank God continually because, when you received the word of God, which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men, but as it actually is, the word of God, which is at work in you who believe.” (1 Thessalonians 2 :13)
They said that when they received the word of God, they did not receive it as the word of men, but as the word of God.
When the apostle Paul taught the Bible and the teachings of Jesus and the apostles, they humbly received and obeyed the Word of the living God.
Then it is recorded that the word worked among the believers of the Thessalonian church.
That is, he lived a life of experiencing the living Word of God.
The cause of all the failures of the kings of Israel, including King Solomon, is that they did not receive the Word of God as the Word of God and did not love and value the Word of God.
“When he takes the throne of his kingdom, he is to write for himself on a scroll a copy of this law, taken from that of the priests, who are Levites. It is to be with him, and he is to read it all the days of his life so that he may learn to revere the LORD his God and follow carefully all the words of this law and these decrees” (Deuteronomy 17:18-19), although God clearly said through Moses, many kings of Israel neglected and ignored God's word, so failure and suffering came in their lives.
However, the kings who valued the Bible and loved it and followed its words lived a successful life in God's sight.
This applies not only to the kings of Israel, but also to all believers
I've heard someone say "Let's be successful" is an abbreviation of "Let's study the Bible" in Korean.
That's right
A successful life is a life of always studying the Bible
And here, Bible study does not stop at just reading, studying, understanding, and receiving grace from the Bible, but goes on to practice what you have learned and realized.
That's the real Bible study. That's how you live a truly spiritually successful life.
In today's text, King Josiah is a very unfortunate man in some ways.
Because his grandfather, King Manasseh, reigned for 50 years and his father, King Amon, reigned for two years, not serving God, but serving foreign gods.
Because he is a king who lived in a time when the word of God seemed to have disappeared.
But, fortunately, King Josiah had faith in God, and his grandfather and father worshiped foreign gods and the maintenance was not good, so he ordered the old temple to be repaired.
And in the meantime Hilkiah the high priest found the book of the law in the temple, and the book of the law was delivered to Shaphan the secretary, and Shaphan the secretary read the book of the law in front of the king
How did King Josiah react?
“When the king heard the words of the Book of the Law, he tore his robes.” (2 Kings 22:11).
Ripping clothes like this was customary for the Jews to express their heartache and pain.
Hearing the words of the Book of the Law, he realized that his grandfather Manasseh and his father King Amon had done so much wrong with God and that all the people had been affected.
Then the king said to Hilkiah the priest and his servants to ask the Lord God about the book they had found.
“Go and inquire of the LORD for me and for the people and for all Judah about what is written in this book that has been found. Great is the LORD's anger that burns against us because our fathers have not obeyed the words of this book; they have not acted in accordance with all that is written there concerning us.” (2 Kings 22:13).
God's wrath is great because he disobeyed God's word and committed many sins, so he commanded them to go and ask God how to relieve God's wrath.
What should they do? back to the word of God
So King Josiah gathered all his servants and people, and cried out to obey God with all his heart and mind, and to put into practice what is written in God's book of the law.
And the Reformation was accomplished by eliminating Gentile worship, restoring Jehovah's feasts and sacrifices, and restoring holiness before God.
Here we see that in order for “spiritual reform or revival” to take place, a rediscovery of the Bible for the Word must take place.
The spiritual revival of our lives takes place when we feel the thrill that this Bible, this word of God, we didn't know deeply about before, but it is the book of salvation that God loved and gave to save this sinner
And when we earnestly feel that this Bible is a book that can save not only me, but our nation, our country, and all mankind in the world, we will love the Bible more and more and live according to the Bible.
Even in Nehemiah's time, spiritual revival was accomplished through the Word.
In Nehemiah 8, after the wall was built, Nehemiah had the priests, including Ezra the scribe, read the book of God's law to the Israelites.
In Nehemiah 8:2-3, it is said that in the square in front of the floodgates, men and women and everyone who could understand language gathered together and read the word from dawn to noon.
And in verse 8, it is recorded that he not only read those words, but also interpreted them and made them understand.
Then what happened?
“They read from the Book of the Law of God, making it clear and giving the meaning so that the people could understand what was being read. .... For all the people had been weeping as they listened to the words of the Law.” (Nehemiah 8:8-9a).
As people realized the Word, they began to shed tears of repentance because of the sins of their ancestors and because of their own sins, and spiritual reform and revival took place.
As the Word was heard, the Word was realized and the importance of the Word and the power of the Word were rediscovered, spiritual revival took place.
There is Elder Kim Seong-il, who is famous as a Christian novelist and writer.
This person was originally a believer, but in the third year of middle school, he was fascinated by the philosophy of Nietzsche and Chartres, and left the church and left the Lord.
And when he reached the age of 40, when his wife was diagnosed with stomach cancer and had surgery, he realized that he had no one to depend on, and started looking for Jesus, whom he had learned in the church as a child.
And he clings to God and begins to pray earnestly, and God spares his wife. But the chance of a relapse was 50/50, so he had to be nervous all the time.
So, he thought that he should become a child of God that is pleasing to God, so he read and studied the Bible.
So he bought a college notebook and started reading while recording the key points of the Bible.
He said that when he came home from work, he read the Bible and studied except for the time to eat.
He said that if he had any questions while reading the Bible, he would go to church and ask God during prayer time.
Then, God has given the answer in various ways.
He said that if he had any questions while reading the Bible, he would go to church and ask God during prayer time.
Then, God has given the answer in various ways.
As he continued to read the Bible like this, he came to know that the Bible truly saves sinners, and that there is the secret of true happiness along with salvation in the Bible.
And he said that he was overjoyed to discover that the main character of the Bible is Jesus, and that all the content of the Bible, either directly or indirectly, points to Jesus.
In this way, he gets to know God more deeply through the Bible.
And with the many things he realized while reading and studying the Bible, he wrote many Christian novels and essays.
Also, he lived a precious life of preaching the living God and preaching the gospel through books and numerous testimony meetings.
A person who left the church and left the Lord because of Nietzsche and Chartres' philosophy met the living Lord while praying in front of his wife's life and death several decades later and fell in love with the Bible.
It is a precious life used by the Lord like the apostle Paul, and it has been transformed into a successful life in the true sense.
Beloved, the Bible is a very precious book Jesus said
“You diligently study the Scriptures because you think that by them you possess eternal life. These are the Scriptures that testify about me” (John 5:39).
Also 2 Timothy 3:15 says, “and how from infancy you have known the holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.” (2 Timothy 3:15).
Is there any book in this world that will give you eternal life and help you to be saved?
Only the bible. Therefore, the Bible is the book of books and the most precious book.
There are thousands of books in this world. There are tens of millions or hundreds of millions of books. But by far the best book is the Bible. Therefore, let's study the Bible Let's be successful Let's diligently read, study, meditate and practice the Bible every day
There's nothing stupid like not reading this best book and not studying
If you leave the Bible, your life will be a failure, but if you always love the Bible and live according to the Bible, I believe that you will always experience the word of God and live a happy and successful life that grows and matures more spiritually.
I bless all of us who live while enjoying God's blessing as we always draw closer to, love, and practice the Bible for the rest of our lives.
