(Luke) 23:39-43 April 10 22
“Those who were saved on the cross”
As we learned every year at Christmas, Jesus gave up the glory of the high and high heavenly throne and came to this low and low earth as a baby to save us.
He was also born in a manger where horses and cattle feed in a stable where horses and cattle live.
And as we always learn through Lent, Holy Week and Easter, Jesus finally died on the cross and rose again to save us
So, we ask a fundamental question here.
Jesus came to this earth to save sinners, and finally died on the cross and rose again. The question is what is salvation?
In other words, salvation is simply a question of whether we can receive it or not, or whether we must receive it.
To answer this question, we must first ask the question of who I am.
1. Who am I?
The question, Who am I? is both an easy and a difficult question, but the Bible is clear on this easy and difficult question.
First, I am a creature of God.
The Bible teaches that I was created by God. Of course, my parents gave me birth, but the ultimate origin of life is God, and there is no human being born without God's plan, so I am a creature of God.
“Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground."
So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.” (Genesis 1:26-27).
The Bible speaks of the creation of man
I do not exist in this world by chance, but I am born in God's delicate design and plan
Second, I am a creature of God and therefore I am related to God.
God is my Creator and He who created me wants to continue to have close fellowship with me and to have a good relationship with me.
There is no one who does not value the kinship of parents and siblings.
We are deeply moved when we read through the media the stories of people who thought they were orphans but grew up to meet their biological parents or siblings, or the scene where the biological parents reunited with their children who were adopted abroad at the age of their children.
So is our relationship with God. God is our source of life and our spiritual Father.
However, the spiritual status of those who are living independently of God is spiritual orphans and wandering children.
If we live apart from God, it is like a branch falling from a tree, and as Augustine said, man can never enjoy true peace and rest apart from God.
Third, I am the only and precious being
Man created by God is unique and special. No one is alike. I am the only one in this world. So precious
God created each and every one of us as the most precious beings.
Also, God made all creation for man and let man rule.
And man was created for the glory and joy of God. So, in Isaiah 43:7, the Bible says
“everyone who is called by my name, whom I created for my glory, whom I formed and made.” (Isaiah 43:7).
However, many people do not know that God is their Creator and do not know that they are created for the glory and joy of God, so they distance themselves from God and live a self-centered life that seeks their own glory, not God's.
Why? This is because humans are sinners. In this way, humans are the only precious beings created in the image of God, but they are only polluted in sin and live a life of sinners.
Above, we learned about ‘I’ through the Bible
Then, the main question of today, what is salvation, and do I really need it? How do we receive salvation? Let's take a look at the question
2 What is salvation and why is it necessary?
Salvation means being rescued from a situation from which you cannot get out on your own.
In English, it is called save or deliverance.
In particular, salvation in the Bible means being saved from the sins I have committed and the punishment of my sins.
That is why in Matthew 1:21, Jesus said, “She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” (Matthew 1:21).
However, when this word is used on the human side in the Bible, it is always used in the passive form.
That is, I do not save, I am saved. Salvation is always God's work.
Salvation is necessary for all human beings without exception
Because all human beings have sinned and each one who has sinned must pay the price for his sin.
Is there anyone in the world who is not a sinner?
If yes, that person only adds one more sin of lying.
The Bible declares that all human beings are sinners.
“As it is written: "There is no one righteous, not even one” (Romans 3:10).
“for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23).
However, since the God who made us is a holy God, he said that those who come before him must be without sin, and if they do, he will never forgive them.
Therefore, all human beings in the natural state are subject to God's judgment without exception.
That is why similar teachings of judgment can be found all over the world and in many cultures from ancient times to modern times.
For example, in Egypt, after death, if a person has more sins than good deeds, they go to hell. Islam also teaches that after death, all the sins and good deeds of a person's life are weighed on a scale, and if you lean toward your good deeds, you will go to heaven, and if you lean towards your sins, you will go to hell.
However, these teachings are the product of human creation and are false teachings that cannot be conferred with any divine authority.
Man cannot be saved because of the sins he has already committed, no matter what good deeds he adds.
3 How can I be saved?
So how can we be saved?
Is it possible with good deeds or merit?
Human beings need and must do good deeds, but doing good deeds does not remove the sin of going to hell.
Good deeds do not take away sins
It's just like painting white on black paper doesn't make the black disappear.
Therefore, the Bible teaches that no one attains salvation by good works.
“because by the works of the Law no flesh will be justified in His sight; for through the Law comes the knowledge of sin.” (Romans 3:20).
Also, there are many religions around us. Each religion has its own valuable teachings.
So, if you look at religion in the meaning of Chinese characters, it is called 'the chief teaching'. Therefore, we must have respect for other religions as well.
But when it comes to salvation, there is a clear distinction
The Bible is assertive about salvation that there is no other name in the world by which we can be saved, and there is no other way.
“He is the STONE WHICH WAS REJECTED by you, THE BUILDERS, but WHICH BECAME THE CHIEF CORNER stone.
"And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved.” (Acts 4:11-12).
And Jesus said firmly
“Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” (John 14:6).
Any human being is a sinner, so a sinner cannot save himself.
And because everyone is a sinner, we cannot solve the sins of others.
But if God only practices His justice, all humans are sinners, so all humans deserve the punishment of hell and be destroyed.
However, because God is both righteous and loving, he could not possibly destroy all his loved ones, so he sent his beloved only begotten Son, Jesus, and the sinless Son of God, Jesus, was punished for our sins on the cross for us all sinners. He bled and died for us.
Regarding this, Isaiah 53 prophesies about the death of Jesus as follows, 700 years before the coming of Jesus.
“But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed. We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all.” (Isaiah 53:5-6).
It is at the cross of the Lord that God's justice, who hates sin and judges sin, was fulfilled, and his great love for sinful mankind was simultaneously demonstrated.
And on the third day after his death, Jesus overcame the powers of sin and death and rose again to become the true and unique Savior of all mankind.
I said earlier that salvation cannot be obtained by good works, by penance, by merit, or by any other religion or by any other works.
Salvation cannot be obtained by any human effort. So, as sinners, we can obtain it as a gift only through faith in the salvation that Jesus accomplished through the cross.
“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith--and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God--
not by works, so that no one can boast.” (Ephesians 2:8-9).
The Bible tells us that there is nothing we can do to be saved.
All you need to do is accept the salvation that Jesus accomplished through his death on the cross and resurrection as a gift.
This is called belief
None of us will run in the elevator or climb the wall because the elevator will take us to the floor we want.
Jesus is like the elevator that leads us to eternal heaven
If you believe and accept Jesus, you will be saved and receive eternal life in the kingdom of heaven because of Jesus, not because of your efforts or merits.
However, you have to get into the elevator and you must have faith in the elevator to enter. Likewise, you have to get on the elevator of salvation accomplished by Jesus to be saved, and getting on that elevator can be called faith.
Today's text tells the story of two thieves who were crucified together when Jesus died on the cross.
However, at first both thieves criticized and cursed Jesus, but as time passed, one of the thieves changed his mind.
Jesus was crucifying himself as he died, praying to God for forgiveness to those who mocked him, and the silent, holy image he entrusted to the disciple who loved his mother.
And he remembered the stories people told about Jesus' miracles and teachings
And he thought, "This man is absolutely no ordinary man. This man is truly holy. He may be the Messiah the Bible speaks of."
And he rebukes another thief who still mocks and curses the Lord, saying, "If you are the Christ, save yourself and us," he defends that we are sinners, but this man is righteous and holy.
This is today's text from verses 39-41.
“One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at him: "Aren't you the Christ? Save yourself and us!"
But the other criminal rebuked him. "Don't you fear God," he said, "since you are under the same sentence?
We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong.” (Luke 23:39-41).
And with humility he asks the Lord for help, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” (Luke 23:42).
These words are the humble and pure confession of faith of the robber, “I accept you as my savior, I repent of my sins, forgive me for my sins and lead me to your kingdom, heaven.”
Then the Lord answered
“I tell you the truth, today you will be with me in paradise.” (Luke 23:43).
These words are, “Because you have believed in me, I will forgive all your sins and I will save you. Today you will be with me in my paradise in heaven.”
In this way, he received the grace of salvation on the cross, the place of death of the worst curse.
In this way, the gospel of the cross has the power to save any sinner if he believes in him, no matter where he is, whoever he is, and what kind of sin he has committed.
One day, John Wesley, the founder of the famous Methodist Church, was on a missionary tour through the mountains of England.
But in a secluded place he met a robber
“Get off your horse and give me everything”
But even after looking all around, the only thing Wesley had was the Bible.
“In all likelihood, I met a poor man. It’s unlucky,” said the robber and left. Then Pastor Wesley called the robber to leave.
“Look, stop for a moment. I have the most precious thing. I want to give it to you.”
Then the robber said, "What is it?" Then he said
“I will give you the most precious thing, that you may receive the grace of the precious blood of Jesus Christ.
There is no forgiveness for your sins except the blood of Jesus Christ. Believe in the blood of the Lord, repent, be saved, and live as a new person.”
Then the robber laughed and said, "I've seen all the crazy ones," spit on him and left.
Ten years later, Pastor Wesley gave a sermon at a church meeting and as the meeting was over, a gentleman approached and greeted him. He was a man of faith very respected in that church.
“Who are you?” “Pastor, I am the person who robbed the pastor 10 years ago. But after hearing your words, I keep remembering the words of Jesus’ blood on the cross, and I finally repent and believe in Jesus and become a new person. Thank you Pastor.”
Therefore, in season and out of season, all churches, all pastors, and all saints believe that we must preach the gospel of the cross of Jesus regardless of place or person.
Earlier I said that salvation means being saved from the sins I have committed and the punishment of my sins, but this is the half explanation of salvation.
Salvation is being saved from sin and punishment, and at the same time, becoming a glorious child of God, walking with Jesus who saved me in the thrill of thanksgiving and salvation, living a life that resembles the Lord, and finally enters the eternal kingdom of heaven.
The former salvation is the salvation of justification, and the next is the salvation of sanctification.
When these two are combined, salvation is the complete form.
That's why the Apostle Paul says, "And he died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for him who died for them and was raised again." (2 Corinthians 5:15).
Everyone, did you really believe in the grace of the cross of the Lord and were saved? Then, today, when Lent ends, on Palm Sunday and this week of Holy Week, as well as for the rest of our lives, I bless you to always be grateful and moved by the grace of the cross and the power of the blood of the Lord.
And I hope that no matter what happens, do not forget your grace and do not become arrogant.
I hope that all of us will always be humble, preaching the gospel in joy and hope, and living a life centered on the Lord, not on ourselves.
I believe that this is the secret to living in this world as the most noble in God's sight and pleasing to God.
